The Weekly Maintenance Wash: Keeping the Gloss Through Autumn

A bad wash technique doesn't just leave water spots—it grinds dirt into your paint, creating swirl marks that cost hundreds to fix.

Don't let the Aussie sun and bat droppings cook your clear coat. Here is a quick, no-nonsense checklist for a weekly maintenance wash that'll keep your pride and joy looking mint without spending all day on it.

The Weekly Maintenance Wash: Keeping the Gloss Through Autumn

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years in this game and the biggest mistake people make is letting dirt sit too long. Between the red dust and the coastal salt, a quick weekly wash is your best defence. This guide is for the daily driver that needs to stay protected against our harsh March UV levels. It's fast, efficient, and gets the job done before the footy starts.

01

The Essential Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Two buckets with grit guards — One for soapy suds, one for rinsing. Don't skip the guards unless you want swirl marks.
Karcher or pressure washer — Essential for getting that gritty red dust off the panels before you touch 'em.
Quality pH neutral soap — I'm a big fan of Bowden's Own Nanolicious or Meguiar's Gold Class.
Microfibre wash mitt — Ditch the sponge. Sponges are for the dishes, not your car.
Dedicated wheel bucket and brush — Never use your paint bucket on wheels. Made that mistake once on a black Commodore and the scratches were a nightmare.
Large twisted loop drying towel — The Gyeon Silk Dryer is a cracker. Absorbs everything in one pass.
Quick Detailer or Ceramic Boost — To top up the protection and add that slickness back.
Tyre shine and applicator — I prefer a water-based one so it doesn't sling all over the guards.

Pre-Start Rituals

What You'll Need

0/4
Check panel temperature — If it's too hot to touch, don't wash it. You'll just get water spots.
Park in the shade — Even if it means moving the missus' car out of the carport for an hour.
Inspect for 'biologicals' — Look for bat or bird droppings. These need a soak before you touch them.
Close all windows and sunroof — Common sense, but I've seen some soggy interiors at the servo car wash.

The Weekly Workflow

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Clean the wheels while the rest of the car is dry. Use your dedicated brush and soap. This prevents water spots drying on the paint while you're scrubbing rims.

02

The Big Rinse

Blast off the loose dust and salt. Pay extra attention to the wheel arches and lower sills where the road grime hides. Don't be stingy with the water.

03

Contact Wash (Top Down)

Using the two-bucket method, wash one panel at a time. Start at the roof and work down. Rinse your mitt in the clean water bucket after every panel.

04

Final Rinse

Give it a thorough rinse. I reckon a 'sheeting' method with just the hose end works best to get most water off before you even grab the towel.

05

Drying

Lay your drying towel flat and pull it across the surface. No need to scrub. Get into the door jambs too, nobody likes a drip on their clean sills.

06

Protection Top-up

Mist a bit of quick detailer or ceramic spray (like Gtechniq C2) as you go. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with a full wax every week, this is much faster.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the glass — Ensure no streaks. A clean windshield makes the whole car look better.
Check the side mirrors — Clear out any trapped water behind the glass so it doesn't run down later.
Dress the tyres — Gives it that finished 'just detailed' look. Makes a huge difference.
Inspect the front bumper — Make sure all the bug guts are gone. Leftover bugs will eat into the clear coat.

Watch Out

Never wash your car under a gum tree; the sap is a nightmare and the dropped branches will do more than just scratch the paint. Also, if you've got bat droppings, soak them with a wet paper towel for 5 minutes first, if you scrub them dry, the seeds in the poop will scratch your paint like sandpaper. Trust me on that one.

Detailer's Secret

If you're dealing with red dust from an outback trip, use a snow foam if you've got one. It lifts the grit away from the paint better than just a hose. But if you're in a hurry, just a good long rinse will do the trick.
