Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Dirty wheels make a clean car look rubbish. This quick checklist covers the gear and steps you need to get rid of brake dust and that stubborn Aussie red dirt without ruining your finish.

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.

Look, I've spent 15 years scrubbing everything from dusty farm utes to high-end Euro SUVs with matte black rims. Most people mess this up by using the wrong chemicals or working on hot wheels. This checklist is designed to get you pro results in your own driveway while protecting your gear from the brutal March sun. Follow this and your wheels will actually stay clean for longer, I promise.

The Essential Gear

What You'll Need

Dedicated Wheel Bucket — Never use your paint bucket for wheels. I learned this the hard way when I scratched a black Commodore back in 2010. Keep 'em separate.
pH Neutral Wheel Cleaner — P&S Brake Off or Bowden's Own Wheely Clean are my go-to's. Avoid the cheap acid stuff from the servo.
Large Barrel Brush — Something like a Wheel Woolie or a Daytona brush to get deep into the drums.
Soft Detail Brush — For the nuts and calipers. A 1-inch boar's hair brush works best.
Stiff Tyre Brush — You need something chunky to scrub the old brown gunk off the rubber.
Iron Remover — Essential if you haven't cleaned them in a while or drive a heavy Euro car.
Microfibre Drying Towel — An old one is fine, just don't use your good paint towels.
Quality Tyre Shine — I reckon Meguiar's Endurance Gel is the best for Aussie heat. It doesn't sling off onto your doors.
Pressure Washer or Hose — Pressure washer is better for knocking off that thick red outback dust.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

Are the wheels cool to the touch? — If you just got off the freeway, wait 20 mins. Spraying cold water on hot rotors is a recipe for warped discs.
Are you in the shade? — Never do this in direct midday sun. The chemicals will dry instantly and leave nasty white streaks.
Check for wheel weights — Make sure they aren't loose before you start hitting them with high pressure.
Inspect for gutter rash — Keep an eye out for jagged bits of aluminium that might catch your wash mitt or cut your hand.

The Process

Dry Blast

Pressure wash the wheels and arches first. Get as much loose grit and red dust out before you even touch the surface with a brush.

Decon the Rubber

Spray your tyre cleaner or APC on the rubber. Scrub with your stiff brush until the suds turn white instead of brown. Rinse well.

Apply Wheel Cleaner

Spray your chosen cleaner onto the rim. Let it dwell for 2-3 minutes. If it turns purple, that's the iron remover doing its thing.

Agitate the Grime

Start with the barrels using your long brush, then move to the face and wheel nuts with the soft brush. Keep it lubricated with soapy water.

The Final Rinse

Flush everything thoroughly. Pay attention to the lug nut holes and the brake calipers where soap likes to hide and cause streaks later.

Dry and Dress

Dry the wheel completely. Apply a thin layer of tyre shine to the sidewall. Don't go overboard, less is more if you want to avoid 'sling'.

Final Inspection

No brown spots on tyres — If it's still brown, you didn't scrub hard enough. Give it another crack.
Barrels are clean — Look past the spokes. If the back of the rim is still black with dust, it ruins the whole look.
No water spots on the face — Wipe 'em down quickly so the Aussie sun doesn't bake mineral deposits into your clear coat.

Watch Out

Don't use 'Acid' based cleaners on polished aluminium or aftermarket matte wheels. They'll stain or cloud the finish instantly. Also, watch out for 'tyre sling', if you put too much shine on and drive off immediately, you'll spray greasy dots all down your clean doors. Give it 10 mins to dry.

Pro Tip

I tell all my clients: if you live near the coast, wax your wheels. A simple spray sealant like Gtechniq C2 makes salt and brake dust wash off with just a hose next time. Saves your back and your rims.
