First Wash Checklist for Your New Rig

A bad wash technique doesn't just leave water spots—it grinds dirt into your paint, creating swirl marks that cost hundreds to fix.

Don't let the dealership 'complimentary wash' ruin your fresh paint with swirl marks. Here is exactly what you need to do that very first time you get it home to keep it looking mint.

First Wash Checklist for Your New Rig

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen brand new cars come straight from the lot looking like they've been cleaned with a scotch-brite pad. This guide is for the blokes and ladies who just picked up a new daily or a 4x4 and want to do it right from day dot. We're talking about getting that factory rail dust and dealership wax off properly before the Aussie sun bakes it on for good.

01

The Proper Gear (Don't Skimp Here)

What You'll Need

0/8
Two 15L Buckets with Grit Guards — One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt. Essential for avoiding swirls.
Kranzle or decent Pressure Washer — You need the grunt to blow off that red dust before you touch the paint.
Snow Foam Cannon & Juice — I reckon Bowden's Own Snow Job is the best for our conditions.
Quality Microfibre Wash Mitt — Ditch the sponge. Sponges are paint killers, plain and simple.
Dedicated Wheel Bucket & Brushes — Never use your paint mitt on the wheels. Brake dust is basically shards of metal.
pH Neutral Car Wash — Meguiar's Gold Class is a classic, or Gtechniq GWash if you're fancy.
Big-arse Microfibre Drying Towel — The Gyeon Silk Dryer is a game changer. One pass and it's dry.
Iron Remover Spray — To get rid of 'rail dust' from when the car was on the ship/train.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Paint temperature check — Is the bonnet cool to the touch? If it's been sitting in the sun, wait.
Shade check — Never wash in direct Aussie sun. The soap dries too fast and leaves spots.
Window check — Are they all rolled up? Sounds stupid, but I've soaked a mate's new interior once. Never again.
Inspect for 'surprises' — Check for bat droppings or bird juice. These need extra soaking, don't scrub 'em.

The First Wash Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheel Decon

Spray your iron remover on the wheels while they're dry. Let it bleed purple for 2-3 mins, then scrub and blast it off.

02

The Snow Foam Soak

Coat the whole car in thick foam. Let it dwell for 5 mins to loosen the grit. This is the best bit, honestly.

03

The Big Rinse

Pressure wash from the top down. Get into the wheel arches and door gaps where that fine dust hides. Be thorough here.

04

Contact Wash (2-Bucket Method)

Wash one panel at a time using the soapy mitt. Use zero pressure, just glide it. Rinse the mitt in the clean water bucket after every panel.

05

Iron Decon on Paint

Spray iron remover on the wet paint. New cars are covered in transport metal. If it turns purple, it's working. Rinse it off properly.

06

Final Rinse and Dry

Flood the paint with a low-pressure hose to let the water sheet off, then pat dry with your big microfibre towel. No rubbing!

04

A Note on Dealership 'Protection'

Look, I'll be blunt, most of those 'lifetime' paint protections the dealer sells you for two grand aren't worth a knob of goat's cheese. I had a customer bring in a brand new Raptor that had 'protection' applied, and I could still see the factory delivery marks under it. If you want real protection, get a proper Ceramic Coating from a pro detailer or do it yourself with something like Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light. Don't waste your money at the showroom.
05

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/3
Door Jams — Wipe them dry so you don't get those annoying drips later.
Glass Clarity — Check for streaks. A bit of waffle-weave microfibre is best for this.
Tyre Shine — Apply a water-based dressing. Don't use the greasy cheap stuff that slings onto your paint.

Watch Out

NEVER use dish soap. It'll strip the oils out of your rubber seals and dry out your clear coat faster than a week in the Simpson Desert. Also, if you drop your wash mitt on the ground, it's dead to you. Chuck it in the wash and grab a fresh one, one tiny pebble will ruin your Sunday.
