Autumn Prep: Getting Your Paint Ready for the Cool Change

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let the cooler weather fool you. Autumn in Australia means battling stubborn bat droppings and the leftover salt from those summer beach trips before the frost hits.

Autumn Prep: Getting Your Paint Ready for the Cool Change

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, March is that weird time in Oz where it's still 30 degrees one day and pouring rain the next. I've spent 15 years fixing paint that's been absolutely nuked by a summer of UV and red dust. This is about spending an arvo now to save yourself a massive headache (and a huge bill) come winter. Whether you're dodging salt spray on the coast or red dirt out west, these tips will keep your pride and joy protected.

01

Why Bother with Autumn Protection?

Most blokes wait until it's freezing to think about car care, but honestly, by then the damage is done. After a brutal Aussie summer, your wax is probably cooked and your clear coat is thirsty. I once had a customer bring in a white Hilux that looked like it had chickenpox, turned out he'd let bat droppings sit on it for two weeks in the March humidity. It ate straight through to the primer. Don't be that guy. A little bit of effort now means you aren't scrubbing moss out of your window seals in July.

Decontamination is Non-Negotiable

Before you chuck any wax or sealant on, you've gotta get the 'invisible' junk off. Use an iron remover (something like Bowden's Own Wheely Clean works on paint too) to get rid of those tiny orange rust spots. If the paint feels like sandpaper, grab a clay bar. I made the mistake once of waxing over fallout on a black Commodore, it looked like I'd polished it with a brick. Clean paint is protected paint.

The 'Bat Snot' Emergency Kit

In Autumn, the flying foxes go nuts. Their droppings are basically pure acid. I reckon you should keep a bottle of quick detailer and a fresh microfibre in your glovebox at all times. If you see a hit, get it off immediately. Don't wait until you get home from work or it'll etch for sure. My go-to is Meguiar's Quik Detailer, simple, cheap, and does the job.

Sealant Over Wax for the Wet

I love a good Carnauba wax for a Sunday show car, but for a daily driver in the Aussie rain? No way. Use a synthetic sealant or a ceramic spray like Gtechniq C2. It lasts months rather than weeks and handles the heat much better when we get those weird 35-degree days in late March. It makes washing the car way easier because the mud just slides off.

Don't Forget the Glass

Autumn brings early morning dew and foggy windscreens. Give your glass a proper clean with an invisible glass cleaner (avoid the soapy stuff from the servo). Apply a rain repellent like Rain-X or the Glaco stuff. It's a game changer when you're stuck in a coastal downpour and your wipers can actually keep up. Your missus will thank you when she's driving in the dark.

The Autumn Protection Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
pH Neutral Car Wash — Don't use dish soap, it strips everything you're trying to build up.
Iron Remover Spray — Essential for removing metallic fallout from brakes and rail dust.
Synthetic Sealant or Ceramic Spray — I recommend Bowden's Bead Machine for ease of use.
Quality Microfibre Towels — Get the 400gsm ones. Throw the old crusty rags in the bin.
Plastic Trim Restorer — Stops your black plastics from turning grey after the summer sun.

Watch Out

Don't ever, and I mean ever, try to 'scrub' bird poo off dry paint with a paper towel at the servo. You'll scratch the clear coat deeper than a kookaburra's laugh. Also, stop using those 'brush' car washes. They're basically giant sand-filled mops that'll ruin your finish in five minutes flat.

Common Questions

Is it too late to ceramic coat my car in Autumn?
Nah, it's actually the best time. The temps are milder so the coating doesn't flash too fast. Just make sure the surface is 100% dry and you've got a garage to keep it in overnight while it cures.
How do I get red dust out of the door seals?
It's a pain, isn't it? Use a soft detailing brush and some mild APC (All Purpose Cleaner). Once it's clean, hit the rubber with a silicone-based protectant so the dust doesn't stick as badly next time.
Does salt spray really matter if I don't drive on the beach?
Absolutely. If you live within 5km of the coast, that salt is in the air. It settles on the paint and traps moisture, which is a recipe for corrosion. A good sealant is your best mate here.
