Summer UV & Salt Protection Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let the Aussie sun cook your clear coat. Here is a quick checklist to get your paint and trim protected against UV, salt spray, and those nasty bat droppings.

Summer UV & Salt Protection Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Living near the coast? Salt air corrodes metal and degrades rubber seals. A fortnightly wash underneath is essential, not optional.
Quick Summary

Look, March might be the start of Autumn, but we both know the UV is still brutal enough to peel the paint off a Hills Hoist. After 15 years in the game, I've seen too many decent daily drivers ruined by sun fade and salt. This checklist is what I use to prep cars for a long season of coastal runs or outback dust. Grab a cold one and let's get into it.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Good quality pH neutral car wash — Stick with Bowden’s Own Nanolicious or Meguiar’s Gold Class. Avoid the cheap degreaser-heavy stuff from the servo.
Synthetic Sealant or Ceramic Wax — I reckon Gtechniq C2V3 is the go-to for UV. Traditional carnauba wax just melts in our 40 degree heat.
Trim Protectant with SPF — 303 Aerospace Protectant is the king here. It's like sunscreen for your plastics (trust me on this one).
Two 10L buckets — One for soapy water, one for rinsing. Keeps the grit off your paint.
Microfibre wash mitt — Ditch the old sponge. Sponges are for dishes, not your pride and joy.
Clay bar or clay towel — Essential if you've got red dust or fallout baked into the paint.
3-4 clean microfibre towels — For buffing off your sealant. Make sure they're fresh, I learned that lesson the expensive way on a black Commodore.
Tyre shine (water-based) — Keeps the sidewalls from cracking in the sun.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the surface temperature — If you can't keep your hand on the bonnet for 5 seconds, it's too bloody hot to work on.
Park in the shade — The carport or garage is your best mate. Working in direct sun is a recipe for streaks.
Inspect for bird/bat bombs — Bat droppings are acidic enough to eat through paint in 24 hours. Get them soaking in wet paper towels now.
Check your hose length — Nothing worse than getting halfway through and the hose kinks under the back tyre.

The Protection Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Pre-Rinse & Underbody Flush

Blast off the loose dust and salt spray. If you've been near the coast or on dirt, spend extra time under the arches and the chassis.

02

Two-Bucket Wash

Start from the roof and work down. Use your two buckets to ensure you aren't just moving dirt around. Rinse often so the soap doesn't dry.

03

Clay Bar (If needed)

Run your hand over the paint. If it feels like sandpaper, use a clay bar with plenty of lubricant. It'll pull out that embedded outback red dust.

04

Dry Thoroughly

Use a large drying towel. Don't leave water spots to dry in the sun, they're a nightmare to remove once they've etched in.

05

Apply Sealant/Ceramic Wax

Apply your UV protection product one panel at a time. A little goes a long way. Buff it off immediately with a clean microfibre until it’s slick.

06

Dress the Trim

Wipe 303 onto your window seals, wipers, and plastic bumpers. This stops them turning that nasty chalky grey colour. Honestly, don't skip this part.

07

Tyre & Wheel Protection

Apply tyre shine and, if you're feeling keen, a bit of that paint sealant on the wheel faces to help shed brake dust and salt.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check for 'ghosting' — Look at the panels from an angle to make sure you've buffed all the sealant off.
Door jambs and sills — Wipe them dry so you don't get those annoying drips later on.
Glass check — Make sure no wax or trim dressing got on the windscreen. Smears at night are dangerous as.

Watch Out

Never use dishwashing liquid on your car. It strips the oils out of your paint and plastics, making them go brittle in the sun. Also, if you’re using a pressure washer, keep it away from your radiator fins and parking sensors, they're more fragile than they look.

Pro Tip

Keep a small spray bottle of 'Quick Detailer' and a microfibre in the boot. If a bird drops a present on your car while you're at the shops, you can get it off before the sun bakes it into your clear coat. Your bank account will thank you when you don't need a respray.
