The Golden Rule: Lubrication is King

Never, ever just grab a dry tissue and try to rub bird poo off. It's full of seeds, grit, and bits of bone that'll scratch your paint faster than a cat on a screen door. You need a dedicated quick detailer, I reckon Bowden's Own 'Fully Slick' or Meguiar's Quik Detailer are the best for this. Spray it on thick, let it sit for 60 seconds to soften the crud, and then gently lift it off. Don't scrub it.

Keep a 'Poop Kit' in the Boot

I keep a small spray bottle of detailer and a couple of clean microfibres in my glovebox at all times. If you're out at the beach and see a fresh hit, you can sort it in 30 seconds before the salt air and UV start cooking it into the panel. (The missus thinks I'm obsessed, but her car doesn't have etch marks, does it?)

The Wet Paper Towel Trick

If you've got a real stubborn, baked-on mess and you're at home, don't pick at it with your fingernail. Soak a paper towel in warm soapy water (or your detailer), lay it flat over the spot, and leave it there for 5-10 minutes. It'll rehydrate the mess so it slides right off. Works a treat on those massive fruit bat bombs we get in the summer.

Ceramic Coatings Are Your Best Mate

Honestly, if you're sick of worrying about this, get a ceramic coating. Something like Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light makes the surface so slick that the acid can't bite in as quickly. It buys you time. I've found on my own daily driver that most bird mess just pressure washes off without even needing a sponge if the coating is fresh.

Quick Detailer Spray — Don't use glass cleaner, it can strip your wax.

Plush Microfibre Towels — The fluffier the better to trap grit.

Bottle of Water — In a pinch, plain water is better than nothing.

Nitril Gloves — Bat droppings can carry some nasty bugs, stay safe.

Watch Out

Do not use a kitchen green scrubby sponge or a stiff brush. I made this mistake on a black Commodore when I was 17 and ended up having to machine polish the whole bonnet to get the scratches out. Also, stay away from using petrol or harsh thinners to 'dissolve' it, you'll ruin the trim and potentially haze the paint.

Common Questions

What if it's already left a dull mark?

That's an etch mark. You'll likely need a light hand polish with something like Meguiar's Ultimate Compound to level the clear coat. If it's deep, you might need a pro to look at it.

Does wax protect against bird poo?

A bit, but not for long. A good carnauba wax might give you an hour of protection, whereas a ceramic coating gives you a day or two. In the Aussie heat, no wax stands a chance against bat acid for long.

Is bat poo different from bird poo?

Too right it is. Bat droppings are usually much more acidic and contain seeds that act like sandpaper. Treat bats with double the caution.
