Paint Correction Essentials: Getting That Mirror Finish

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years chasing the perfect finish, and truth be told, most blokes rush the prep and wonder why the car looks like rubbish. This list is exactly what I use in my shop to get paint popping, whether it's a daily driver or a weekend toy. We're focusing on safe, effective techniques that'll hold up against our brutal UV and that sticky red dust. Give it a crack and take your time.

01

Before You Pick Up The Machine

I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore years ago, never polish in the direct sun. If the panels are hot to the touch, you're just going to bake the polish onto the paint and have a nightmare of a time getting it off. Get yourself into the garage or under a decent carport, grab a cold one, and follow this list.

Step-By-Step Technique

01

Prime the Pad

Apply 3-4 pea-sized drops of compound. Spread it across the pad face with your finger so there are no dry spots.

02

Section Selection

Work in a small area, about 40cm x 40cm. Don't try to do the whole bonnet at once or the polish will dry out.

03

The Working Pass

Use slow, overlapping horizontal and vertical movements. Keep the pad flat! If you tilt it, you'll get uneven results or heat build-up.

04

Pressure and Speed

Apply moderate pressure, enough to slow the machine slightly but not stop the rotation. Use speed 4 or 5 on most DA machines.

05

Wipe and Inspect

Buff away residue with a clean microfibre. Use your IPA spray to remove oils so you can see if the swirls are actually gone.

A Few Bits of Advice

I once saw a guy try to polish a car with a dirty pad he'd dropped on the garage floor. Every rotation just ground more grit into his paint. Honestly, if you drop a pad on the ground, it's dead until it's washed. Also, keep a brush handy to 'spur' your pad every few sections, it stops the polish from clumping up and getting grabby.

Watch Out

Stay away from sharp body lines and edges! The paint is naturally thinner there, and even a safe DA machine can burn through if you're not careful. Also, never use a rotary polisher unless you've practiced on a scrap panel first, they'll eat through your clear coat faster than a hungry kelpie through a steak.
