Keeping Your Rig Clean After an Outback Trip

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Red dust and coastal salt are the twin enemies of your paintwork. Here is how to tackle the toughest Aussie grime without ruining your clear coat.

Keeping Your Rig Clean After an Outback Trip

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, we've all been there, you come back from a big trip and the car is more red than white. This is for the blokes and ladies who actually use their 4x4s but don't want them looking like scrap metal in three years. I'm going to show you how to handle everything from that stubborn Pilbara dust to the salt spray from a weekend at Fraser.

01

The Reality of Aussie Off-Roading

Right, so you've just spent two weeks living the dream, but now your pride and joy looks like it's been through a blender. After 15 years in the trade, I've seen too many people 'she'll be right' their way into a ruined respray. Between the red dust that eats into your seals and the salt spray that turns your chassis into Swiss cheese, you've gotta be smart. Don't just chuck a bucket of soapy water at it and hope for the best.

The Dry Dust Secret

Before you even touch a hose, use an air compressor to blow out the dust from your door seals, engine bay and window tracks. I learned this the hard way when I soaked a customer's dusty LandCruiser and just created a red mud paste that set like concrete in the air vents. Blow it out dry first, then wash.

Iron Decontamination is Non-Negotiable

If you've been near the coast or driving on corrugated roads, your paint is likely full of tiny metal particles. Use a dedicated iron remover like Bowden's Own Wheely Clean (it's not just for wheels, trust me) or Gtechniq W6. Spray it on a dry car, watch it turn purple, and rinse it off. It stops the rust before it starts. I reckon most 'mystery' orange spots on white Hiluxes are just untreated iron fallout.

The Underbody Flush

Don't just spray the side of the car. Get an underbody water broom or a dedicated salt neutralizer like Salt-Away. I once had a mate who never washed under his Patrol after beach trips, three years later, I could put my thumb through the frame rail. If it’s been in salt, you need to spend 20 minutes just on the guts of the car.

Clay Bar Your Glass

Truth be told, people forget their windscreen. After a dusty trip, your wipers will drag that grit across the glass and scratch it to buggery. After a thorough wash, use a clay bar on your windows. It’ll make them feel like silk and your wipers won’t chatter. Your partner will thank you when they can actually see through the glare on the way to the shops.

The Post-Trip Cleanup Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
A high-quality snow foam — Lifts the grit so you don't scratch the paint.
Two buckets with grit guards — One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt.
Salt neutralizer concentrate — Essential if you've been anywhere near the ocean.
Boar's hair brush — Perfect for getting red dust out of badges and grilles.
A decent sealant — I'm a big fan of Gtechniq Easy Coat for a quick top-up.

Watch Out

Never, ever scrub red dust with a sponge when the car is dry. You’re basically using sandpaper on your clear coat. I made this mistake myself on a black Commodore years ago and spent three days polishing out the swirl marks. Also, don't use dish soap, it strips the oils out of your rubber seals and makes them crack in the Aussie sun.

Common Questions from the Garage

How do I get the red stain out of my white paint?
If a normal wash doesn't do it, you need a chemical decontamination. Use a fallout remover first, and if that fails, a light polishing compound with a dual-action polisher will lift the staining out of the pores of the paint.
Is a ceramic coating worth it for off-roading?
100%. It won't stop a rock chip, but it makes washing off mud and dust ten times easier. Most of the dirt just slides off with the pressure washer. Some people swear by wax, but in 40 degree heat, wax just melts off in a week.
