Outback Interior Rescue: The Red Dust & Winter Salt Checklist

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Don't let that fine red dust eat your upholstery from the inside out. This checklist covers the exact gear and steps I use to get 4x4 cabins back to showroom nick after a big trip.

Outback Interior Rescue: The Red Dust & Winter Salt Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from dusty farm utes to pristine weekenders, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that Aussie red dust is a different beast. It gets into the pores of your leather and the weave of your carpets like nothing else. This list is my personal go-to for a deep interior reset, especially if you've been hitting the tracks or living near the coast where the salt air makes everything sticky. Grab a cold one, chuck your gear in the garage, and let's get into it.

01

Essential Gear & Chemicals

What You'll Need

0/8
High-powered Vacuum — Don't bother with those cordless handhelds; you need a proper wet/dry vac with a crevice tool.
Interior Detailer (Non-Greasy) — I'm a big fan of Bowden's Own Interior Detailer. It doesn't leave that cheap, oily shine that reflects off the windscreen.
Boar's Hair Brushes — Essential for agitating dust out of the air vents and stitching. Toothbrushes are too stiff, don't do it.
Microfibre Cloths (At least 10) — You'll go through heaps. Use one for dirty work, one for buffing. Don't mix 'em up.
Leather Cleaner and Conditioner — If you've got hide, use some Gtechniq L1 or similar. Our sun kills leather faster than anything else.
Compressed Air or a Petrol Blower — My secret weapon for getting dust out of the seat rails and from under the dash.
Fabric Protector — Once it's clean, spray it. It makes the next clean-up way easier.
Glass Cleaner (Ammonia Free) — I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore, ammonia ruins window tint. Avoid it.
02

Pre-Start Ritual

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Winter sun is still heaps strong. Cleaning chemicals dry too fast on hot plastics.
Empty the 'rubbish Bin' — Chuck the old servo receipts and Maccas bags. Start with a blank canvas.
Remove all floor mats — Give them a good thrashing against a brick wall. You'll be amazed how much dust comes out.
Check for 'hidden' surprises — A customer once brought in a Prado with a rotting prawn under the seat from a beach trip. Check every corner first.

The Detailing Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Big Blow Out

Open all the doors. Use compressed air or a blower to blast dust out of crevices, seat rails, and under the seats. It'll get messy, but it's the only way.

02

Deep Vacuum

Start from the top (roof lining) and work down. Use the brush attachment for the dash and the crevice tool for the gaps. Spend time on the carpets.

03

Dash and Trim Agitation

Spray your interior cleaner onto your brush, not the dash. Work it into the grain of the plastic to lift that red outback dust, then wipe clean.

04

Leather or Fabric Scrub

If it's leather, use a dedicated cleaner and a soft brush. For fabric, a gentle scrub with some APC (All Purpose Cleaner) usually does the trick.

05

Door Jams and Seals

Don't forget the rubber seals. Dust and salt sit here and perish the rubber. Wipe them down with a damp cloth and a bit of protectant.

06

Invisble Glass

Clean the inside of the windscreen last. Use two cloths, one to apply the cleaner and one bone-dry microfibre to buff away any streaks.

04

The 'Missus Approved' Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Cup holders — Check for sticky residue. It's the first thing people notice.
Sun visors — Often forgotten. Wipe the mirrors and the top edge where fingers grab them.
Seat tracks — Slide the seats all the way forward and back to ensure no gravel is left in the rails.
Rear-view mirror — Give it a quick wipe. Fingerprints on glass are a dead giveaway of a rushed job.

Watch Out

Look, whatever you do, don't use high-pressure water inside the cabin. I've seen blokes try to 'hose out' their 70 Series and fry the ECU. Also, stay away from silicone-based 'shiners' on your steering wheel or pedals, it's a death trap when your hands or feet start slipping in traffic.

Expert Tip

To get that 'new car' smell back, change your cabin air filter after a dusty trip. No amount of spray will fix a filter clogged with red dirt and old moisture. It's a 5-minute job on most modern rigs.
