Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, keeping a bike clean in Australia is a constant battle between you and the elements. Whether you're dodging bat droppings in the city or scrubbing red dust after a long weekend away, motorcycles have way too many nooks and crannies for a lazy wash. I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from beat-up dirt bikes to show-quality Harleys, and I've learned that if you don't have a system, you're just moving dirt around. This is for the blokes who want a clean ride without spending all Sunday doing it.

The Struggle is Real

Riding in April sounds great until you realise the UV is still nuking your plastics and the autumn rain is turning that outback dust into concrete. I remember a customer brought in a Ducati that had sat under a gum tree for two weeks, the sap had literally eaten into the clear coat. It was a nightmare. On a bike, everything is exposed: the engine, the wiring, the lot. You can't just slap some soapy water on it and hope for the best. You need to be smart about it, or you'll end up with corroded bolts and cloudy fairings.

Cool It Down First

Never, ever wash a hot bike. I made this mistake once on my old Suzuki, sprayed cold water on a hot engine block and the spotting it left behind took me hours to polish out. Wait at least 30 minutes. If you spray chemicals on a hot exhaust, they'll bake on instantly. Find a bit of shade, grab a brew, and let the metal cool down to the touch before you even think about grabbing the hose.

The Blow-Dry Method

Water loves to sit in bolt heads and spark plug wells, which is a recipe for rust. I don't bother with chamois on bikes anymore, they can't get into the gaps. Get yourself a dedicated car dryer or even just a leaf blower (if the missus isn't looking). Blow the water out of the engine fins and switchgear first. It saves you from those annoying drips that run down your fairings ten minutes after you've finished wiping.

Dust is the Enemy

If you've been out near the red dirt, don't go scrubbing straight away. That stuff is abrasive as hell. Give it a proper long soak with a snow foam or a very gentle hose-down first to move the bulk of the grit. I reckon Bowden's Own Snow Job is the best for this, it clings well and lifts the grime without you needing to touch the paint and risk swirl marks.

Watch the Lube

The biggest mistake I see is people getting degreaser or wax on their tyres or brake rotors. It's dangerous, pure and simple. If you're cleaning your chain, chuck a piece of cardboard behind it to catch the overspray. If you do get some gunk on the tyres, hit them with some brake cleaner immediately. Personally, I wouldn't even bother with tyre shine on a bike, it looks alright for a photo, but it's too risky if it flicks onto the tread.

The Detailing Kit

Watch Out

Don't use a high-pressure washer directly on your bearings, chain, or electronics. I've seen blokes blow the seals right out of their wheel bearings at the local servo wash. Keep the nozzle at least half a metre back. Also, stay away from 'dish soap', it's too harsh and will strip any protection right off your paint.
