Keeping Matte Paint Looking Mean (Without Ruining It) (Mar 2026)

This is the big one. Never, ever use a standard wax, polish, or 'all-in-one' wash on matte paint. These products have 'optical brighteners' and fillers designed to make things shiny. I once had a bloke bring in a matte grey C63 because his missus tried to be nice and waxed it for his birthday. It was a streaky, greasy mess. Use only matte-specific soaps like Bowden’s Own Nanolicious or Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte. If it says 'gloss enhancer' on the bottle, put it back on the shelf.

Since you can't polish out swirls, you cannot afford to drag dirt across the surface. Use two buckets, one for your soapy water and one for rinsing your mitt. I reckon the 'Big Green Sucker' from Bowden's is the best way to dry it off afterward. If you've been out past the black stump and the car is caked in red dust, give it a massive pressure rinse before you even think about touching it with a wash mitt.

In our heat, bird or bat poop will bake into matte paint in about twenty minutes. Because matte paint is porous (at a microscopic level), the acid eats in fast. Keep a dedicated matte detailer spray and a clean microfibre in the glovebox. If a kookaburra decides your bonnet is a target at the servo, clean it off immediately. Don't scrub at it, soak it with the spray and let it lift.

Our UV is brutal, especially in March when it's still cracking 35 degrees. Standard ceramic coatings can sometimes add too much gloss, but something like Gtechniq HALO (designed for wraps and matte) is a lifesaver. It stops the Aussie sun from fading your finish into a weird chalky grey. I’ve seen some matte wraps literally crack and peel after two years in the Queensland sun because they weren't protected.
