Essential Exterior Care Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years polishing everything from dusty farm utes to show-quality HSVs, and the basics never change. This list is designed for the backyard warrior who wants a pro result without the fluff. We're focusing on stripping the summer grime and prepping for the wetter months ahead.

01

The Gear You Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/9
Two 15L Buckets — One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt. Prevents swirls.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Chuck the old sponges in the bin. They're paint killers.
pH Neutral Car Wash — Bowden's Own Nanolicious is my go-to for Aussie sun.
Large Drying Towel — Twisted loop microfibre works best. No chamois (shammy) please!
Wheel Cleaner & Dedicated Brush — Something acid-free like P&S Brake Buster.
Clay Bar or Clay Mitt — Essential if you've got 'sandpaper' feeling paint.
Quality Sealant or Wax — I reckon Gtechniq C2V3 is the easiest way to get 6 months protection.
Glass Cleaner — Stoner Invisible Glass is the only one that doesn't streak for me.
Tyre Shine — Meguiar's Endurance Gel if you like that wet look.

Pre-Start Sanity Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check paint temperature — If it feels hot to the touch, don't start. You'll get water spots.
Find some shade — Under a carport or wait until the arvo when the sun drops.
Check your hose reach — Nothing worse than getting halfway and the hose gets snagged.
Remove jewellery — Made this mistake on a black Commodore once, scratched the door with my ring.

The Wash Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Always do wheels while the car is dry. If you do them last, you'll splash dirty brake dust all over your clean panels.

02

The Big Rinse

Blast off the loose red dust and grit. Focus on wheel arches and the bottom of the doors where the road salt sits.

03

Contact Wash

Use the two-bucket method. Start from the roof and work down. Rinse your mitt in the 'clean' water bucket after every single panel.

04

Decontamination

If the paint feels rough, run a clay mitt over it with plenty of soapy water as lube. This pulls out embedded metallic fallout.

05

The Dry

Lay your drying towel flat and pull it across the surface. Don't scrub. You want to soak up the water before it bakes on.

06

Protect the Paint

Apply your sealant. I've found that in our 40 degree heat, synthetic sealants last heaps longer than natural carnauba waxes which just melt off.

07

Glass and Tyres

Clean the windows inside and out. Apply tyre shine last so you don't accidentally kick it up onto the clean paintwork.

04

The 'Mate's Coming Over' Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Door jambs wiped? — A customer once told me the jambs are the 'soul' of the car. He wasn't wrong.
Water runs behind the mirrors? — Give them a blow or a tap to get those annoying hidden drips out.
Streak-free glass? — Check from an angle. Use a fresh dry microfibre for the final buff.
Even tyre shine? — Make sure there's no globs in the tyre lettering that'll sling down the side later.
05

Expert Opinions

Honestly, don't waste your money on those 'wash and wax' combos from the servo. They're a bit of a gimmick. They don't have enough lubrication to prevent scratches and the 'wax' they leave behind lasts about as long as a choccy bar in the sun. Stick to a dedicated soap and a separate sealer. Also, if you've parked under a gum tree and got sap on the roof, don't scrub it! Use a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a cloth to dissolve it gently. Trust me on that one, I've seen too many people ruin their clear coat trying to pick sap off with a fingernail.

Watch Out

NEVER wash your car with dish soap. It's designed to strip grease off pans and it'll strip every bit of protection off your paint, leaving it dry and prone to UV oxidation. Also, stay away from those 'brush' car washes, they're basically giant sandpaper machines.
