Black Paint Survival Kit: The Autumn Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Detailing a black car in Australia is basically a second job. Here is the exact checklist I use to keep dark paint swirl-free and protected against the harsh Aussie sun and bat droppings.

Black Paint Survival Kit: The Autumn Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, we've all been there. You buy a black car because it looks mint for about five minutes, then you realise every speck of dust is a personal insult. After 15 years of chasing swirls on black Commodores and Rangies, I've narrowed it down to this specific workflow. It's focused on heat management and minimizing contact so you don't mar the finish.

01

The Gear You Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Two buckets with Grit Guards — Non-negotiable for black paint. One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt.
High-quality Snow Foam — I reckon Bowden's Own Snow Job is the best for our heat; it doesn't dry out too fast.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Chuck the sponges in the bin. You need something that lifts dirt away from the surface.
Dedicated Wheel Bucket & Brush — Never mix your wheel gear with your paint gear (learned that the hard way on a black GTS).
Drying Aid / Quick Detailer — Something like Meguiar's Last Touch to provide lubrication while drying.
Large Twisted Loop Drying Towel — Don't use a chamois. They're scratch-machines on black paint.
Iron Remover — Essential if you're near a train line or heavy traffic to dissolve fallout.
Quality Sealant or Wax — I'm a fan of Gtechniq Liquid Crystal for easy Autumn protection.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check panel temperature — If the bonnet burns your hand, don't start. You'll get water spots instantly.
Assess for 'Bat Bombs' — If there's dried bat or bird droppings, soak them in wet paper towels first. Don't scrub!
Find the shade — Detailing a black car in direct Aussie sun is a recipe for a bad arvo. Use a gazebo if you have to.
Check your water source — If you've got hard water, you need to work twice as fast to avoid spotting.

The Safe-Wash Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Clean wheels while the rest of the car is dry. This stops water from drying on the black panels while you're busy scrubbing tyres.

02

The Snow Foam Soak

Coat the car in thick foam. Let it dwell for 5 minutes to lift the red dust and grit before you even touch the paint.

03

Thorough Rinse

Pressure wash from the top down. Get into every crack and crevice. You want as little dirt as possible left before the contact wash.

04

Two-Bucket Wash

Wash one panel at a time using very light pressure. Rinse your mitt in the 'rinse' bucket after every single pass. Seriously.

05

Iron Decon

Spray an iron remover on the wet paint. If it turns purple, it's working. Rinse it off thoroughly before it dries.

06

Lubricated Drying

Mist the car with a drying aid while wet. Lay your microfibre towel flat and 'creep' it across the surface to suck up water.

07

Protect the Finish

Apply your sealant. Black paint loves a good synthetic sealant in Autumn to guard against the high UV levels we're still getting.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Sunlight/Torch check — Check for streaks or 'high spots' from the sealant. They show up like crazy on black.
Door jambs wiped — Nothing ruins a clean car like water dripping out of the mirrors or doors later on.
Glass streak-free — Use two towels for glass, one to apply, one to buff. Trust me, it's the only way.

Watch Out

Look, I once did a black GTS in the midday sun and the soap dried so fast it etched the clear coat. Never again. If the panels are hot, wait until the arvo. Also, avoid 'brush' car washes like the plague, they'll leave your black paint looking like it was cleaned with a Scotch-Brite pad.
