Autumn Prep: Getting Your Rig Ready for the Cold Months

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Don't let the cooler weather fool you, the Aussie sun is still brutal in March. Here is exactly what you need to do to protect your paint from red dust and salt spray before winter hits.

Autumn Prep: Getting Your Rig Ready for the Cold Months

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many blokes ignore their paint in autumn only to find permanent bird drop etching by June. This checklist is for anyone heading off-road or living near the coast who wants to keep their pride and joy looking mint. We're focusing on stripping the summer grime and laying down some serious protection.

01

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Decontamination Soap — Something like Bowden's Own Snow Job or a high-pH strip wash to get old wax off.
Iron Remover — Essential if you're near a train line or heavy industry. I use Gtechniq W6.
Clay Bar or Mitt — Go for a medium grade if you've been out in the bush lately.
Synthetic Sealant or Ceramic Spray — I reckon Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic is the best bang-for-buck for winter.
Glass Sealant — Angelwax H2GO is my go-to for those rainy winter arvos.
Underbody Water Broom — If you've been on the beach, don't even start without one of these.
Trim Restorer — Solution Finish is the only one that actually lasts, don't waste money on the cheap greasy stuff.
Microfibre Pile of at least 10 — You can never have enough. Chuck any that hit the floor straight in the bin.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the shade — Never work in direct sun. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore, ended up with spots everywhere.
Engine cool to the touch — Pop the bonnet and let it sit for 20 mins while you have a brew.
Wheel check — Look for any deep salt corrosion or brake dust caked in the barrels.
Rubber seal inspection — Check the door seals aren't perished from the summer heat.

The Game Plan

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Heavy Underbody Rinse

Get that water broom under the chassis. A customer once brought in a Hilux with half a beach in the rails, took me hours to flush it out.

02

Iron and Tar Removal

Spray your iron remover on dry paint. Let it bleed purple but do not let it dry. This gets the red dust out of the pores.

03

The Strip Wash

Use a high-pH soap to kill off any remaining summer wax. We want the paint naked so the new sealant actually sticks properly.

04

Mechanical Decon (Clay)

Run a clay mitt over the wet paint. If it sounds like sandpaper, you're doing it right. Keep it lubricated with plenty of soapy water.

05

Apply Paint Protection

Apply your sealant in sections. I prefer cross-hatch movements. This is your shield against the winter rain and coastal salt spray.

06

Seal the Glass and Trim

Buff on your glass sealant and hit the black plastics with restorer. It prevents that white chalky look from the harsh Aussie UV.

04

The 'She'll Be Right' Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Door Jambs — Check there's no red dust hiding in the hinges. Give 'em a quick wipe.
Sealant Streaks — Look at the panels from an angle to make sure you haven't left any high spots.
Wiper Blades — Give 'em a clean with some IPA. If they're streaky, just replace them before the rains start.
Tyre Shine — Don't go overboard, just enough to stop the sidewalls from browning.

Watch Out

Don't use dish soap to strip wax. It's too harsh on rubber seals and can dry out your plastics faster than a weekend in the Simpson. Also, if you're using a pressure washer, keep it away from sensitive sensors in the grille, trust me, those are expensive mistakes.

Pro Tip

If you've got bat droppings on the roof, don't scrub 'em. Soak a towel in warm water and sit it on top for 5 minutes. They'll slide right off without scratching the clear coat.
