Professional Detailing Checklist for Your Driveway

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I have been detailing cars for 15 years and the biggest mistake I see is blokes using the same sponge for the wheels and the paint. This checklist is all about the gear and the order of operations to get your car looking mint while protecting it from our brutal Aussie sun. Whether you are dealing with red dust from a trip out west or bat droppings in the suburbs, this is the workflow I use in my own business.

01

The Essential Gear List

What You'll Need

0/9
Two 15L Buckets with Grit Guards — One for soapy water, one for rinsing. Don't skip the grit guards unless you like swirls.
Quality Microfibre Wash Mitt — Forget the old sponge. I reckon the Bowden's Own Muffy sponge or a Meguiar's mitt is the way to go.
pH Neutral Car Wash — Avoid the cheap stuff at the servo that strips wax. Use something like Autoglym Pure Shampoo.
Dedicated Wheel Bucket and Brush — Keep your wheel gear totally separate from your paint gear. Trust me on this one.
Iron Decontaminator — Essential if you live near a train line or heavy industry. Gtechniq W6 is a cracker.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — A dedicated 'twisted loop' towel is heaps better than a chamois. No more streaks.
Clay Bar or Clay Mitt — If the paint feels like sandpaper after washing, you need this.
Paint Sealant or Ceramic Spray — For our UV, I usually chuck on some Gyeon CanCoat or a good SiO2 spray.
APC (All Purpose Cleaner) — Good for degreasing door shuts and fuel caps.
02

Before You Pick Up The Hose

What You'll Need

0/5
Check Paint Temperature — If the bonnet is hot enough to fry an egg, don't start. You'll get water spots instantly.
Park in the Shade — Even in Autumn, that Aussie sun will dry your soap before you can rinse it.
Check for Bird/Bat Droppings — I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore, if they've baked on, soak them with a wet paper towel first.
Inspect for Stone Chips — Know where they are so you don't blast them with high pressure and lift the clear coat.
Windows Up and Sunroof Closed — Sounds obvious, but I've seen a mate drown his leather seats before. Not a fun arvo.
03

The Step-By-Step Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Clean wheels while the rest of the car is dry. If you do them last, you'll splash brake dust back onto your clean paint.

02

Pre-Wash and Rinse

Blast off the loose red dust and grit with water. If you have a foam cannon, use it now to safely lift the grime.

03

The Two-Bucket Wash

Wash from the top down. Dunk your mitt in the soapy bucket, wash a panel, then rinse it in the clean water bucket.

04

Decontamination

Spray iron remover on the paint. After rinsing, use a clay mitt with plenty of soapy water as lube to get the surface smooth.

05

Drying

Lay your microfibre drying towel flat and pull it across the surface. Don't scrub, let the towel do the work.

06

Apply Protection

Apply your sealant or wax. Since it's March, focus on getting good UV protection on the horizontal surfaces like the roof and bonnet.

07

Glass and Tyres

Clean the glass last to catch any overspray. Apply a non-sling tyre dressing for that finished look. No dramas.

04

The 'Mate, She Looks Mint' Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check Door Shuts — Wipe away any water drips or soap suds in the sills. Your partner will thank you.
Tyre Dressing Evenness — Make sure you didn't miss a spot at the bottom where the tyre meets the ground.
Streak-Free Glass — Check the windscreen from inside the car. The sun always reveals the streaks you missed.
Buff Off Residue — Do a final walk-around with a fresh microfibre to catch any high spots of wax or sealant.

Watch Out

Look, never use dish soap. It’s for greasy pans, not your car’s paint. It’ll strip every bit of protection and leave the plastic trim looking grey and crusty. Also, if you drop your microfibre cloth on the ground, it’s dead to you. Pick up a new one. A single grain of driveway grit will ruin your paintwork in seconds.

A Quick Tip on Red Dust

If you've just come back from a trip and the car is caked in red dust, do not touch it with a mitt first. Give it a massive rinse, then a heavy snow foam, then another rinse. That dust is basically sandpaper.
