Pro Detailing Secrets for Your Driveway

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, you don't need a fancy studio to get your car looking mint. I've spent 15 years polishing everything from dusty farm utes to show-quality HSVs, and the truth is, most people overcomplicate it. This is about working smarter, especially with our brutal UV rays and that nightmare red dust that gets everywhere.

01

Real Talk on Home Detailing

Most blokes reckon they're doing a great job until they see their paint under the servo lights at night and realise it's covered in swirl marks. Between the 40-degree heat and the salt spray if you're near the coast, our cars take a beating. I've seen brand new 300 Series Cruisers with ruined clear coat because the owner let bat gunk sit for a week in the sun. Don't be that person. Here is how to do it properly.

The 'Cool Surface' Rule is Non-Negotiable

Never, ever wash your car in direct sun or when the bonnet is hot to the touch. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore years ago, the soap dried instantly and left spots that took me hours to polish out. If it's a scorcher, get it done at 7 am or wait until the arvo when the sun has dipped. Your products will actually work, and you won't be chasing your tail.

Ditch the Sponge for a Microfibre Mitt

Honestly, throw those yellow foam sponges in the bin. They just trap grit and sand against your paint, acting like sandpaper. Use a high-quality microfibre wash mitt (Bowden's Own makes a cracker called the 'Mitty') and the two-bucket method. One bucket for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt. It's the only way to keep that red outback dust from scratching your clear coat.

Deal with Bird Droppings Immediately

A mate of mine once left some bat droppings on his roof over a long weekend in January. By Tuesday, the acids had literally etched into the paint. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and a clean cloth in the boot. If a bird uses your car for target practice, spray it, let it dwell for 30 seconds, and wipe it off gently. Don't scrub it, or you'll just grind the seeds and grit into the paint.

Sealant Over Wax for the Aussie Summer

I love the smell of Carnauba wax as much as the next guy, but it melts off in 40-degree heat. For our conditions, I reckon a ceramic-based sealant like Gtechniq C2 or even a simple spray sealant like Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic is way better. It handles the UV radiation and makes it much easier to hose off that coastal salt spray or dust later on.

The 'No-Fluff' Detailing Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
Two 15L Buckets — One for wash, one for rinse.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Avoid the cheap sponges.
pH Neutral Car Wash — Something like Snow Job or Meguiar's Gold Class.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — Sucking up the water prevents spots.
Synthetic Spray Sealant — For that 6-month UV protection.

Watch Out

Stop using dish soap! I see this all the time. It's designed to strip grease off pans, so it'll strip every bit of wax and protection off your car, leaving the paint vulnerable to the sun. Also, stay away from those 'brush' washes at the servo, those brushes are usually full of sand from the muddy 4WD that went through before you.

Common Detailing Questions

How often should I actually wash my car?
If it's a daily driver, once a fortnight is the sweet spot. If you live right on the coast or you've been bush, give it a rinse every few days to get the salt or red mud off before it sets.
Is a ceramic coating worth the money?
If you're keeping the car for more than 3 years, absolutely. It's not bulletproof, but it makes cleaning a breeze. For a weekend warrior, a good spray sealant is usually enough.
What's the best way to clean dirty wheels?
Do them first! Use a separate bucket and brush so you don't get brake dust on your paint wash mitt. I'm a big fan of iron decontaminators for this, they're the ones that turn purple when they hit the dirt.
