Post-Trip 4x4 Deep Clean Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let red dust and salt air eat your rig. This checklist covers the gear and steps you need to strip away the outback and the beach before the damage sets in.

Post-Trip 4x4 Deep Clean Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, we've all been there, you get back from a massive weekend up the coast or out in the red dirt and the last thing you want to do is pick up a hose. But trust me, leaving that salt or dust on there for even a week in this Aussie sun is a recipe for disaster. I once saw a brand new LandCruiser come back from a Fraser Island trip with chassis rust starting already because the owner 'didn't have time' for a proper wash. This guide is my personal routine for getting the rig back to showroom nick without wasting your whole Sunday.

01

Get it done right

Right, so you've had a cracker of a trip but the car looks like it's been through a blender. Whether it's that sticky red dust from the Kimberley or salt spray from a beach run, you need to be methodical. If you miss a spot, that's where the corrosion starts. (Believe me, I learned that lesson the expensive way on an old Hilux back in the day).
02

The Essential Gear List

What You'll Need

0/8
Pressure Washer — Don't bother with a garden hose for the underbody, you need some poke.
Underbody Water Broom — Saves your back and actually gets the salt out of the chassis rails.
Bowden's Own Snow Job — My go-to foam for lifting red dust before you touch the paint.
CT18 Superwash — Old school but brilliant for heavy mud and grease. Use it sparingly though.
Soft Boar's Hair Brush — For getting into the grille and around the badges where dust hides.
Two 20L Buckets with Grit Guards — Absolutely non-negotiable if you value your clear coat.
Iron Remover (Gtechniq W6) — Essential if you've been near salt or heavy mining dust.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — Don't let it air dry in 35 degree heat or you'll get nasty spots.
03

Pre-Start Checklist (Don't skip these!)

What You'll Need

0/4
Engine Cool-down — Never spray cold water on a hot turbo or manifold. Let it sit for 30 mins.
Check Windows/Sunroof — The missus left the back window cracked once, ruined the weekend. Double check 'em.
Remove Accessories — Take off the Maxtrax and the awning if you can to clean behind them.
Inspect for Damage — Quick walkaround for any bush pinstripes or torn CV boots before you hide them with foam.
04

The Wash Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Serious Underbody Flush

Spend 15 minutes here. Use the water broom to flush inside chassis rails until the water runs clear. Salt hides in the corners.

02

Engine Bay Blow-out

Keep the pressure back. Use a light mist and some APC to move dust. Avoid direct hits on the alternator or fuse box.

03

Snow Foam Pre-Soak

Chuck a thick layer of foam over the whole car. Let it dwell for 5-8 mins (out of the sun!) to emulsify that red dirt.

04

The Detail Brush Work

While the foam is on, use a brush on the fuel cap, door seals, and window rubbers. Red dust loves these spots.

05

Contact Wash (2-Bucket)

Wash from the top down. Rinse your mitt after every single panel. If you drop the mitt, chuck it, it's done.

06

Decontamination rinse

If you've been on the beach, spray iron remover on the lower thirds. Rinse thoroughly after 3 minutes. (Don't let it dry!)

07

Dry and Protect

Dry it quickly. Apply a spray sealant like Meguiar's Ceramic Wax to make the next trip's clean-up ten times easier.

05

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Chassis Drain Holes — Poke a zip tie in there to make sure they aren't blocked by mud.
Radiator Face — Check for grass seeds or bugs blocking airflow. Gentle rinse only, don't bend the fins.
Door Jambs — Wipe them out. Usually where the 'hidden' red dust lives for years.
Tyre Walls — Check for sidewall gouges from sharp rocks while you're applying tyre shine.

Watch Out

Whatever you do, don't use a high-pressure wand directly on your radiator or intercooler fins, you'll flatten them and overheat on the next hill. Also, avoid 'Truck Wash' chemicals unless you plan on re-waxing the whole car; they're way too harsh for regular use and will dull your trim faster than you can say 'Strewth'.
