Post-Beach Salt and Sand Elimination

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Driving on the sand is a blast, but the salt will eat your chassis alive if you're lazy. This checklist covers how to properly flush your rig so you aren't dealing with rust holes in two years.

Post-Beach Salt and Sand Elimination

Aussie Conditions

Living near the coast? Salt air corrodes metal and degrades rubber seals. A fortnightly wash underneath is essential, not optional.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many pristine 70 Series Cruisers ruined by a 'quick rinse' at the servo on the way home. Salt gets everywhere, especially in our coastal humidity, and once it starts pitting your metal, you're in trouble. This is the exact process I use for my own ute after a weekend at Fraser or Noosa. It's not just about the paint; it's about the bits you can't see.

01

The Essential Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Salt Neutraliser — Don't just use water. Grab something like Salt-Away or Bowden's Own Salt Sifter to actually kill the corrosive bond.
Underbody Water Broom — These attach to your pressure washer and save your back. Best $60 you'll ever spend at Supercheap.
High-Pressure Washer — A basic Karcher or Gerni is fine, just don't go too close to the seals.
Foam Cannon — For dwell time. You want that soap hanging on to pull the salt off.
Dedicated Wheel Brush — Because sand loves to hide behind the spokes and inside the barrels.
Degreaser — For the greasy spots where sand sticks like glue. I reckon CT18 is still the king here.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Stick to the noodle type for beach work; they trap the grit better.
Leaf Blower or Air Compressor — Crucial for blowing water out of door mirrors and fuel caps.

Before You Pick Up The Hose

What You'll Need

0/4
Engine Cool-down — Never spray cold water on a hot turbo or manifold. Let it sit for 20 mins while you have a brew.
Check Drain Holes — Poke a zip-tie through your door and tray drain holes. If they're blocked, the salt water just sits inside the panels.
Remove Floor Mats — Sand in the carpet acts like sandpaper on the fibres. Get 'em out early.
Inspect for Damage — Look for torn CV boots or scraped bash plates where rust will start first.

The De-Salting Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Heavy Underbody Flush

Start here. Use the water broom to flush the chassis rails. I once spent 40 minutes flushing a HiLux and sand was still coming out. Keep going until the water runs clear.

02

Engine Bay Mist

Gently mist the engine bay with salt neutraliser. Don't high-pressure the electrics. I learned that the hard way on a black Commodore, expensive mistake. Rinse with low pressure.

03

Snow Foam Soak

Cover the whole car in foam mixed with salt remover. Let it dwell for 5-7 minutes out of the sun so it can lift the salt film.

04

The Two-Bucket Wash

Standard wash from top to bottom. Use plenty of lubrication. Sand is sharp, and if you're not careful, you'll swirl the paint to hell and back.

05

Wheel and Arch Detail

Get right inside the arches. Salt loves to hide on top of the fuel tank and inside the bumper bars. Reach in and feel for grit.

06

Flood Rinse and Dry

Rinse thoroughly, then dry it fast. In our 40-degree heat, water spots set like concrete in minutes. Use a big drying towel or that leaf blower.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Brake Check — Drive down the street and hit the brakes a few times to dry out the rotors and pads.
Door Jambs — Wipe them out. A mate of mine forgot this and his door bottoms rotted out in a year.
Chassis Rail Tap — Give the rails a light tap. If it sounds 'thuddy', there's still wet sand inside.
Glass Polish — Salt spray leaves a nasty film. Give the windscreen a proper clean with a dedicated glass cleaner.

Watch Out

Avoid 'Chassis Flush' bays at beach-side car washes if the water smells funky; they often recycle the water, meaning you're just blasting high-pressure salt water deeper into your frame. Also, never wax over a car that hasn't been chemically de-salted, or you're just sealing the corrosion in.

Detallier's Secret

Honestly, don't bother with those cheap 'salt spray' bottles from the servo. Most are just watered-down soap. Truth be told, if you're doing a lot of beach work, invest in a Lanolin-based underbody spray (like Lanotec) before you go. It makes this whole checklist ten times faster because the sand just slides off.
