Keeping Your Snorkel and Roof Rack From Fading and Cracking

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Aussie sun and red dust absolutely wreck textured plastics and powder-coated racks. Here is how to keep your off-road gear looking fresh without spending all weekend on it.

Keeping Your Snorkel and Roof Rack From Fading and Cracking

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, if you've spent three grand on a platform rack and a snorkel, the last thing you want is for them to turn that nasty chalky grey after one summer. This guide is for the 4x4 owners who actually use their rigs but want to keep the resale value up. I'm going to show you the quick way to clean 'em and, more importantly, how to stop the UV from killing the plastic.

01

The Struggle is Real

Right, so you've just come back from a trip up the coast or a dusty weekend in the bush. Your snorkel is caked in salt and red dirt, and your roof rack looks like it's been through a blender. Most blokes just hit it with a high-pressure hose at the servo and call it a day, but that's how you end up with permanent staining. After 15 years in the trade, I've seen too many high-end rigs ruined by lazy cleaning. Let's get it sorted properly.

The Red Dust Trap

Red dust is basically tiny rocks that want to sand down your gear. Never, ever scrub a dry snorkel. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore I once owned, scratched the trim to buggery. Always high-pressure rinse the snorkel and rack first to get the grit off before you touch it with a mitt. If you've been out near Birdsville, you might need a dedicated APC (All Purpose Cleaner) like Bowden's Own Agent Orange to break that clay down.

Don't Forget the Snorkel Head

Pop the top off your snorkel every now and then. I had a customer bring in a Ranger that was 'losing power', turns out the snorkel head was half-full of dead Christmas beetles and leaf litter from parking under a gum tree. Give the inside a quick wipe and check that the weep holes aren't blocked, otherwise, the next big storm will have water sitting where it shouldn't be.

The UV Protection Trick

Textured plastic loves to soak up UV and turn grey. Once you've cleaned it, chuck some protection on. I reckon Gtechniq C4 is the gold standard if you want it to last a year, but if you're on a budget, Meguiar's Ultimate Black does a decent job. Just don't use the cheap silicone 'tyre shine' stuff from the servo, it'll just attract more dust the second you hit a gravel road.

Rack Rails and Salt Spray

If you've been beach driving, salt loves to hide in the T-channels of your roof rack. If you leave it, it'll corrode the hardware. I usually take a soft detailing brush and some soapy water and run it right through the channels. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with fancy 'rack waxes', a quick spray of a ceramic-based sealant like Gyeon WetCoat while the car is still wet is the fastest way to keep the salt from sticking.

The Quick Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
Soft-bristle detailing brush — For getting into the honeycomb of the snorkel head
PH-neutral car wash — Don't use dish soap, it'll strip any protection off
All-purpose cleaner (APC) — Dilute it 10:1 for the heavy red dust
Trim Restorer/Protectant — This is non-negotiable for Aussie sun
Step ladder — Because you can't clean what you can't see

Watch Out

Don't use a pressure washer at point-blank range on your snorkel seals or the intake mesh. You'll either rip the mesh or force water past the seals into the airbox. Keep the nozzle at least 30cm back. Also, avoid 'back to black' dyes that are runny, they'll streak down your paint the first time it rains and leave a right mess.

Common Questions

Can I use WD-40 to make my snorkel look shiny?
Nah, don't do it. It looks great for an hour, then it turns into a dirt magnet. It also degrades some plastics over time. Use a proper UV-rated trim protectant instead.
How do I get bird poo off the roof rack without scratching?
Don't scrub it! Soak a microfiber cloth in warm soapy water, lay it over the 'deposit' for 5 minutes to soften it up, then just wipe it away. (The missus will thank you for not using her good kitchen sponges for this).
Is it worth ceramic coating a roof rack?
If it's a brand new Rhino-Rack or Yakima platform, absolutely. It makes washing off bugs and dust 10 times easier. If it's already old and faded, just stick to a good trim restorer.
04

Wrapping Up

Anyway, it's not rocket science, just needs a bit of effort every now and then. Keep the UV off 'em and they'll look new for years. Now get out there and enjoy the tracks. She'll be right!
