Keeping Your Ceramic Coating Mint: The Maintenance Checklist

Factory paint is thinner than ever. Without proper protection, Australian sun and salt will have your clear coat peeling within years.

Don't let our brutal sun and salt spray ruin your investment. This is the exact kit and routine I use to keep ceramic coatings performing like Day One.

Keeping Your Ceramic Coating Mint: The Maintenance Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many blokes spend two grand on a professional coating only to fry it with cheap dish soap or neglect. Especially with our March heat and the bat droppings we get around here, you need a solid plan. This checklist is for anyone who wants their water beading to stay insane and their paint to stay protected from the Aussie elements.

01

Don't Waste Your Money

I learned this the hard way when I coated my first daily driver 10 years ago, you can't just 'set and forget'. If you leave red dust or salt air to bake on in 40 degree heat, it'll clog the coating. Here is the gear you actually need to keep it slick.
02

The Essential Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
PH Neutral Shampoo — Use something like Bowden's Own Nanolicious. Avoid the cheap 'wash and wax' stuff from the servo; it'll gunk up the coating.
Two Buckets with Grit Guards — Non-negotiable. One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — High-quality only. Throw away those old sponges, they're paint killers.
Ceramic Topper/Boost Spray — Gtechniq C2 or Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Detailer. These add a sacrificial layer.
Dedicated Large Drying Towel — A big 'twisted loop' towel. Don't use a chamois, they drag dirt and scratch.
Snow Foam Cannon — If you've got a pressure washer, use it. It's the best way to get abrasive dust off without touching the paint.
Bug & Tar Remover — Safe for coatings. Essential for those nasty Christmas beetles and bat bombs.
Wheel Brush & Cleaner — Acid-free. Most coatings are on the wheels too, so treat 'em nice.
03

The 'Before You Start' Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the Surface Temp — If the bonnet is hot enough to fry an egg, don't touch it. Wait for the arvo shade.
Inspect for Bird/Bat Droppings — Spot clean these first with a wet cloth so you don't drag the acidity across the whole car.
Check Water Quality — If you're out west with bore water, be careful of water spotting. Work fast!
Is it Windy? — If it's blowing a gale, you'll get dust settling on your wet car. Maybe wait for a calmer day.

The Maintenance Routine

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Pressure Rinse

Chuck a heavy stream of water over the whole car. You want to get that abrasive red dust off before you ever think about touching the paint.

02

Snow Foam Soak

Cover it in foam and let it dwell for 5 minutes. This breaks down the salt and road film. Don't let it dry in the sun though!

03

Contact Wash

Use the two-bucket method. Wash from the roof down, rinsing your mitt in the clean water bucket after every panel. No dramas, just take your time.

04

Final Rinse

Flood the panels with water. You should see the coating 'sheeting' the water off. If it’s sticking, the coating is clogged with grime.

05

The Big Dry

Lay your drying towel flat and drag it across. Don't scrub. I once saw a mate use an old beach towel, wrecked the finish instantly. Use microfibre.

06

Apply Protection Boost

Spray your topper (like C2) onto a clean microfibre and wipe on, wipe off. This keeps the UV protection high and the surface super slick.

A Real-World Observation

After 15 years doing this, I've found that Aussie bat droppings are basically battery acid. If one hits your coating, don't wait for your weekly wash. Keep a bottle of detailer in the boot and get it off immediately, or it'll etch right through even the toughest ceramic.
05

The 'Good as Gold' Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for Streaks — Look at the panels from an angle in the sun to ensure no topper residue is left.
Door Jams — Quick wipe down. Dust loves to hide in here and then blow out onto your clean car.
Water Beading Test — Flick some water on the bonnet. It should bead up like little marbles. If it does, you're golden.
Glass Check — Ensure no ceramic topper overspray is on the windscreen, it can cause wiper chatter.

Watch Out

Never, ever use a drive-through 'brush' car wash. It will swirl your coating into oblivion in 30 seconds flat. Also, avoid 'Wash and Wax' soaps, the waxes in them actually hide the hydrophobic properties of your ceramic coating, making it look like it's failed when it's just dirty.
