Keeping Your Black Paint from Becoming a Nightmare (Feb 2026)

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Detailing a black car in the Aussie summer is basically a form of torture if you don't have a plan. Use this checklist to avoid swirl marks and water spots before the sun bakes them in for good.

Keeping Your Black Paint from Becoming a Nightmare (Feb 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years chasing my tail on black paint, and honestly, it'll break your heart if you let it. Between the 40-degree heat and the local bats using your bonnet as a target, black cars in Feb are a full-time job. This list is exactly what I use in my shop to get that deep gloss without losing my mind.

01

The 'Black Paint' Survival Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Two 15L Buckets with Grit Guards — Non-negotiable. If you aren't using grit guards on black paint, you're just rubbing dirt back in.
High-Lubricity Soap — My go-to is Bowden's Own Nanolicious Wash. It's got the slickness you need for soft clear coats.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Ditch the sponges. Use a clean, long-pile microfibre mitt.
Drying Aid / Quick Detailer — Something like Meguiar's Last Touch. Never dry a black car 'dry' (I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore).
Massive Drying Towel — A high-quality twisted loop towel. One pass, no rubbing.
Clay Bar or Clay Mitt (Fine Grade) — Only if you're polishing after. Otherwise, leave it alone or you'll mar the finish.
Iron Remover — Gtechniq W6 or similar. Crucial for getting salt and rail dust off without touching the paint.
Quality Sealant or Wax — In this heat, I reckon a ceramic-based sealant like Gyeon CanCoat is better than wax which just melts.
02

Pre-Start Checklist (Before you touch the hose)

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the paint cool to the touch? — If it's been sitting in the Feb sun, do not wash it. You'll get instant water spots. Wait for the arvo.
Are you in total shade? — Black paint can hit 70 degrees in the sun. Soap will dry in seconds and leave a mess.
Check for bat droppings or bird spice — Treat these first with a soaked paper towel. Don't scrub them or you'll scratch the clear coat.
Are your towels actually clean? — I once ruined a client's black Merc because a tiny bit of red dust was stuck in my 'clean' towel. Check 'em twice.

The Wash Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Pressure Rinse

Blow off all that summer dust and coastal salt. Start from the top and work down. Don't be stingy with the water.

02

Snow Foam (Optional but recommended)

If you've got a foam cannon, use it. Let it dwell for 5 mins to lift the grit so you don't drag it across the paint.

03

The Two-Bucket Method

Wash one panel at a time. Dip in the soap, wash, then rinse the mitt in the plain water bucket before going back for more soap.

04

Decontamination

Spray your iron remover on the lower halves. If you're near the coast, you'll see it bleeding purple as it eats the salt and iron.

05

Lubricated Drying

Mist each panel with your drying aid while it's still wet. This adds lubrication so your towel won't create tiny swirl marks (spiderwebs).

06

Seal the Deal

Apply your sealant. In Aussie summer, black paint needs UV protection or the clear coat will give up the ghost in 3 years.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/3
Door jambs and fuel flap — Check for hidden drips. Water running out of mirrors is the enemy of a black car.
Check for 'High Spots' — If you used a ceramic sealant, make sure there are no dark oily patches left behind.
Sunlight Check — Take it out of the garage and check the panels from a 45-degree angle. This is where the swirls hide.

Watch Out

Never, ever use a 'brush' at a self-serve car wash on black paint. It's basically like washing your car with a brick. Also, if you get a bat dropping on your black bonnet in 40-degree heat, you've got about 20 minutes before it etches the paint permanently. Keep a bottle of quick detailer in the boot for emergencies.
