Keeping Your Bike Mint in the Aussie Sun

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Detailing a bike is a different beast compared to a car, there's way more nooks and crannies to hide salt and red dust. Here is how to protect your ride from the harsh Autumn UV and coastal corrosion without spending all day on it.

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I have been detailing bikes for over 15 years now and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that neglect kills a motorcycle faster than a low-side slide. Whether you are dealing with salt spray on the Goldy or that fine red dust that gets everywhere after a trip out west, you need a solid routine. This is for the blokes and ladies who want their machine looking showroom fresh without the fluff. Just straight, practical advice from someone who has cleaned more greasy chains and bug-splattered fairings than I care to count.

01

The Reality of Aussie Riding

Riding in Australia is world-class, but our conditions are absolute murder on paint and chrome. Between the 40-degree heat we just finished with and the salty coastal breeze, your bike's finish is under constant attack. I once had a customer bring in a beautiful Triumph that had been parked near the beach in Sydney for just two weeks without a wash, the corrosion on the spoke nipples was already starting. Truth is, if you don't stay on top of it, your resale value goes down the toilet faster than a stray roo on a backroad.

Don't Wash a Hot Engine

I've seen guys pull into a servo after a long ride and immediately blast the engine with cold water. Please, don't do that. You risk cracking the manifold or spotting the engine casing permanently. Let it cool down while you have a brew. Once it's touch-safe, then you can give it a crack. Also, keep the high-pressure wand away from your radiator fins and wheel bearings, you'll blow the grease right out of them and that's a bill you don't want.

The Bug Problem

Autumn in the bush means bugs. Big ones. If you leave them on your fairings, the acidity will etch into the clear coat in no time. I personally use a dedicated bug remover like Bowden's Own 'Bugger Off'. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute (but don't let it dry!), and they'll slide right off. I learned the hard way on my own black CBR that scrubbing hard with a sponge just leaves nasty swirls. Let the chemicals do the heavy lifting.

Red Dust and Salt Protection

If you've been out near the red dirt or the coast, you need more than just soap. After a thorough wash, I reckon a good ceramic sealant is a must. Something like Gtechniq C2 is dead easy to apply, just spray on and wipe off. It creates a slick barrier so the dust doesn't stick as hard next time. For the metal bits, a quick wipe with an anti-corrosion spray like ACF-50 is absolute gold. It's the only way to stop that coastal salt from eating your bolts.

Mind the Seat and Tyres

For the love of all things holy, do not put any 'shiny' protectants on your seat or the tread of your tyres. I made this mistake once on a mate's commuter, he nearly slid off the back the first time he hit the throttle. Use a dedicated leather or vinyl cleaner that leaves a matte, non-slip finish. For the tyres, just scrub the sidewalls with a stiff brush and a bit of APC (All Purpose Cleaner). Keep the slippery stuff for the fairings.

The Bare Essentials Kit

Watch Out

Stop using dish soap! It's designed to strip grease, which means it'll strip any wax or protection off your bike too. Also, never use a chamois. They drag dirt across the surface. Switch to microfibre and your paint will thank you (and look way better in the sun).
