Keeping the Soft Top Mint: The Essential Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Soft tops take a beating in the Aussie sun, especially with the UV and bat droppings we deal with. This guide covers the gear and steps you need to keep your roof from fading, leaking, or rotting away.

Keeping the Soft Top Mint: The Essential Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many MX-5s and Wranglers with roofs that look like dried-out husks because the owner just ran them through a servo car wash. In our heat, especially coming out of a brutal summer, you've got to be proactive. This checklist is based on 15 years of scrubbing canvas and vinyl, it's everything you need to do the job right in your own driveway.

01

The Gear You Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Soft Top Cleaner — Don't use dish soap. Get something like Bowden’s Own Fabratection or the Autoglym kit. It matters.
Soft Horsehair Brush — Avoid stiff nylon brushes. I learned this the hard way on a black BMW, it'll fray the fibres and make it look furry.
Fabric Protectant (UV Rated) — 303 Fabric Guard is my go-to. It's the only thing that stands up to QLD sun.
Microfibre Towels (at least 4) — For patting dry and wiping drips off the glass.
Low-tack Painter's Tape — To mask off the rubber seals and glass before you spray the sealant.
Vacuum with a brush attachment — Gotta get that red dust out of the grains before you get it wet.
Plastic Drop Sheet or Newspaper — To cover the rest of the car. Sealant overspray on paint is a nightmare to get off.
Buckets and a Hose — Standard two-bucket method. No pressure washers! You'll blow the seals.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Never do this in direct sun. The cleaner will dry too fast and leave nasty streaks.
Check for 'presents' — If there's dry bird or bat poo, soak it with a wet paper towel first. Don't scrub it dry or you'll tear the fabric.
Feel the texture — If it feels like sandpaper, it's bone dry. Be extra gentle with the brush.
Inspect the stitching — Check for loose threads. If the stitching is gone, a deep clean might actually make the leak worse.

The Step-By-Step Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Vacuuming

Thoroughly vacuum the roof while it's dry. This pulls out the fine Aussie dust that turns into abrasive mud once you add water.

02

Rinse and Pre-Soak

Wet the roof with a gentle stream of water. Don't blast the seals or the rear window join. Just get it evenly damp.

03

Apply Cleaner

Spray your cleaner evenly. I usually work in quarters. Let it dwell for 2-3 minutes but don't let it dry out (very important in 30 degree heat).

04

Gentle Agitation

Use your horsehair brush in small circular motions. I once saw a bloke use a scrub brush from the kitchen, ruined the roof in ten minutes. Use light pressure.

05

The Big Rinse

Rinse until the water runs totally clear. If you leave soap in there, it'll attract dirt like a magnet and go mouldy in the humidity.

06

Drying

Pat the roof dry with clean microfibres. Don't rub. Let it air dry completely (usually 3-4 hours) before you even think about applying protectant.

07

Mask and Protect

Cover your windows and paint. Spray two light coats of protectant, waiting 20 minutes between each. This is what fights off the UV and salt spray.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check for 'beading' — Once dry, drop a bit of water on. It should bead up like a duck's back. If it soaks in, you need another coat.
Wipe the seals — Make sure no cleaner or sealant is sitting on the rubber. It'll make them squeak like crazy when you're driving.
Interior Check — Check the underside of the fabric inside the car for any moisture that might have seeped through.

Watch Out

A mate of mine once used a pressure washer at a servo on his Jeep roof and blew a hole straight through the canvas. Honestly, keep the high pressure away. Also, never fold your roof down while it's even slightly damp, it'll grow more mould than a forgotten loaf of bread in the pantry.
