Interior Detailing Checklist: Beating the Dust and UV

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let that red dust or coastal salt rot your cabin from the inside out. This checklist covers the gear and steps you need to get your interior back to showroom quality without wasting your whole Saturday.

Interior Detailing Checklist: Beating the Dust and UV

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from dusty farm utes to high-end Euro SUVs, and the secret isn't some magic chemical. It's actually having a systematic way of attacking the mess so you don't just move dirt from one spot to another. Since it's Autumn and that sun is still biting, we're focusing on deep cleaning and serious UV protection. This is the exact process I use in my own shop every day.

01

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Karcher or similar wet/dry vac — Get the narrow crevice tool. I've lost more coins and hot chips in seat rails than I care to admit.
All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) — Dilute it 10:1. I reckon Bowden's Own Agent Orange is a crackin' Aussie choice for this.
Boars hair detailing brushes — Essential for getting dust out of air vents and around the gear stick.
Microfibre cloths (at least 6) — Don't use the ones you used on your greasy wheels. Keep interior towels separate.
Interior Scrub Pad — Like a Ninja Pad. Best thing ever for getting grime off textured plastic door cards.
UV Protectant — Aerospace 303 or Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber. Avoid the 'shiny' cheap stuff from the servo; it just attracts more dust.
Glass Cleaner — Stoner Invisible Glass is my go-to. Ammonia-free is a must if you've got aftermarket tint.
Leather Brush & Cleaner — If you've got cow hide, you need a dedicated leather soap, not just APC.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Never clean a hot interior. Chemicals flash off too fast and leave nasty streaks.
Clear the rubbish — Empty the door pockets and centre console. Check under the seats for rogue Maccas fries.
Lower the windows slightly — Lets you clean that top 1cm of glass that usually stays hidden in the seal.
Remove floor mats — Whack them against a brick wall first to get the heavy sand out. It's therapeutic.

The Detailing Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Big Blowout

Use compressed air or your vac on blow mode to get dust out of the tight spots before you start wiping. It saves a heap of time.

02

Dry Vacuuming

Vac everything from the top down. Seats first, then carpets. Spend extra time on the driver's footwell where that coastal sand hides.

03

Hard Surface Scrub

Spray APC on your brush or pad, not the dash. Work it into the grain and wipe away the lather with a clean microfibre immediately.

04

Leather & Fabric Care

Clean leather with a dedicated brush. For fabric stains, I usually find a quick agitation with APC and a damp cloth does the trick.

05

UV Protection Application

Apply your protectant to the dash and door tops. This is crucial for Aussie cars, I've seen way too many cracked Holden dashboards from sun neglect.

06

Crystal Clear Glass

Use two towels: one to apply cleaner and one to buff dry. This is the only way to avoid those annoying hazy streaks at night.

07

Door Jams and Seals

Don't forget the bits you only see when the door is open. Wipe the grease and red dust out of the sills and rubbers.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the instrument cluster — Make sure no cleaner is streaking on the clear plastic. It's very soft, so be gentle.
Check the pedals — Wipe them with a dry cloth. Never put dressing on pedals, they'll get slippery and that's a bloody nightmare.
Seat rail inspection — Slide the seats all the way forward and back to make sure you didn't miss a spot.
The 'Mate' Test — Open the passenger door. If it smells fresh and looks matte (not greasy), you're gold.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'silicone' based dressings on the steering wheel or gear knob. I made this mistake once on a black Commodore and nearly slid off the road when my hand slipped. Also, go easy on the water around modern touchscreens and electronic handbrakes; they don't like getting soggy.
