Grip and Grime: The Steering Wheel Deep Clean (Mar 2026)

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Your steering wheel is the filthiest part of your car, soaking up skin oils, sweat, and outback dust. Here is how to strip the muck without ruining the leather.

Grip and Grime: The Steering Wheel Deep Clean (Mar 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, most people forget the steering wheel until it starts feeling sticky or looking shiny (that's skin oil, not 'clean' leather, by the way). After fifteen years of detailing, I've seen wheels so caked in red dust and sunblock they were basically a biohazard. This checklist is for anyone who wants to get back that factory-fresh feel and stop the harsh Aussie sun from cracking their rim.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/9
Dedicated Leather Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own Leather Love is the go-to for Aussie conditions.
Soft Boar's Hair Brush — Crucial for getting into the grain and stitching.
White Microfibre Towels — Use white so you can actually see the muck coming off.
Interior Detailer or APC — Only if your wheel is plastic or 'vegan' leather.
Magic Eraser (Use with caution!) — Only for absolute disasters on hard plastic wheels. Never on leather.
Leather Conditioner — Something with UV blockers like Gtechniq L1 Smart Fabric/Leather.
Toothpicks or a soft detailing pick — For getting the gunk out of the stitching seams.
A small bucket of warm water — Just for rinsing your brush out as you go.
Steam cleaner (Optional) — Great if the missus has one in the cupboard for the floors.
02

The Pre-Start Check

What You'll Need

0/5
Identify the material — Is it real leather, Alcantara, or just textured plastic?
Check for peeling — If the clear coat on the leather is already flaking, be bloody careful.
Park in the shade — Don't do this in 40-degree heat or the cleaner will flash off too fast.
Test spot — Always hit the back of the wheel first to make sure the dye doesn't lift.
Remove rings/jewellery — Made this mistake once on a black Commodore and scratched the hide, never again.

The Deep Clean Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Brush and Vacuum

Give the wheel a quick brush and vac to get rid of loose red dust or sand. You don't want to turn that dust into mud.

02

Apply Cleaner to Brush

Don't spray the wheel directly (it gets behind the buttons). Spray your brush, then work it into a lather on the surface.

03

Work the Sections

Work in quarters. Use light circular motions. I once saw a bloke scrub a leather wheel like he was sanding a deck, he ruined it.

04

The Wipe Down

Use a damp microfibre to wipe away the lifted grime. If the towel comes back brown, go again. That's years of sweat right there.

05

Clean the Stitching

Use a toothpick or soft brush to gently clear the salt and sweat buildup from the seams. This is where most wheels start rotting.

06

Protect and Shield

Apply a thin layer of UV protectant. This stops the Aussie sun from turning your leather into cardboard by next summer.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for 'Slippery' feel — If it feels greasy, you haven't wiped the cleaner off properly. Dangerous!
Matte finish achieved — Clean leather should be matte, not shiny. Shiny equals oily.
Button check — Make sure no liquid dripped into the volume or cruise control switches.
Check the back of the spokes — Everyone misses the bits your fingertips actually touch.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'Armor All' style high-gloss wipes on your steering wheel. They make the rim as slippery as a greased pig, which is a nightmare when you're trying to navigate a tight track or a freeway off-ramp. Also, keep the steam away from the airbag seams, too much heat can be a drama you don't want to deal with.

Pro Tip

If you've been out bush and the wheel is caked in that fine red dust, use a damp microfibre first before using any chemicals. That dust is abrasive as hell, and if you start scrubbing with a brush straight away, you're basically sandpapering your steering wheel. Treat it gentle and it'll last another ten years.
