Getting Your Paint Smooth as Glass Before Winter Hits

Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

If your car feels like sandpaper after a long Aussie summer, washing it won't fix the problem. Here is how to strip off the red dust, salt, and baked-on grime without ruining your clear coat.

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, after the summer we've had, your paint is probably copping it. Between the 40 degree days and those bloody fruit bats, your car's surface is likely covered in stuff that a standard wash just won't touch. This is a quick guide on how to decontaminate your paint properly so your wax or ceramic coating actually sticks. It's for anyone who wants their daily driver to look decent again without spending all weekend on it.

01

Why a normal wash isn't enough

Right, so you've given the rig a scrub but the paint still feels gritty? That's embedded contaminants. Think of it like a splinter in your skin, you can't just wash it off. In Australia, we deal with the worst of it: iron filings from brakes, sticky sap from gum trees, and that red dust that seems to weld itself to the clear coat. If you don't get this stuff off before you wax, you're just sealing the dirt in. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore years ago, I waxed right over some fallout and it looked like a literal orange peel. Never again.

Tip 1: Use a Chemical Decon First

Don't jump straight to the clay bar. Hit the dry car with an iron remover first (something like Bowden's Own Wheely Clean or Gtechniq W6). Most of that 'gritty' feeling is actually tiny metal particles from brakes. If you see it turning purple, it's working. It saves you a heap of elbow grease and prevents you from scratching the paint by dragging those metal bits across the surface with a clay bar.

Tip 2: Work in the Shade (No, Seriously)

I know, everyone says it, but in the Aussie sun, these chemicals dry in about thirty seconds. If an iron remover or clay lubricant dries on your paint in 35 degree heat, you're in for a world of hurt trying to get the streaks off. Wait for the arvo or do it under a carport. I once had a customer try to decontaminate his LandCruiser in full sun at midday, the chemicals baked onto the bonnet so hard I had to machine polish the whole thing to save it.

Tip 3: Clay Mitts are a Lifesaver

Old-school clay bars are great, but if you drop one, it's bin material. Chuck it. One grain of sand from the driveway and you're basically sanding your car with a rock. These days, I reckon you're better off with a clay mitt or a synthetic clay pad. If you drop it, you just rinse it off and keep going. Using a clay mitt with a bit of soapy water is my go-to for a quick maintenance detail.

Tip 4: Dealing with the 'Bat Bombs'

If you've got baked-on bat droppings or gum tree sap, don't scrub it. You'll mar the paint. Use a dedicated bug and tar remover or even a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre. Let the chemical do the work for a minute, then wipe. If it's really stuck, lay a soaked rag over it for five minutes. Trust me, your clear coat is thinner than you think, so don't go at it like you're scrubbing a burnt pot.

Watch Out

Whatever you do, don't use dish soap as a clay lube. It's too harsh and strips all the oils out of your trim. Also, never, and I mean never, clay a car without washing it thoroughly first. You'll just be grinding surface dirt into your paint. It's a recipe for a bad time and a very expensive respray.

Wrap Up

Right, that's the gist of it. Get the chemicals to do the heavy lifting, keep the surface lubricated, and don't do it in the blistering sun. It's an extra hour of work, but when you feel that paint afterwards, you'll see why it's worth it. Give it a crack this weekend, your car will thank you for it. Cheers!
