Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let summer storms and outback dust ruin your visibility. Here is how to prep your glass and apply a repellent that actually lasts in the 40 degree heat.

Clear Vision in the Summer Heat: Windscreen Prep and Water Repellents (Feb 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, there is nothing worse than being caught in a summer downpour and having your wipers just smear mud across the glass. This guide is for anyone sick of blurry windscreens and those annoying wiper streaks. I'll show you how to get your glass so clean the water just flies off, even without the wipers on. It's easy stuff, but there are a few tricks to getting it right in this heat.

01

Why Bother with Glass Treatment?

Most blokes reckon a quick squirt at the servo is enough to clean a windscreen, but honestly, that's how you end up with scratches and permanent water spots. Between the red dust and the kamikaze bugs we get this time of year, your glass takes a beating. A proper repellent doesn't just help with rain; it stops the bird muck and salt spray from baking onto the surface. I learned this the hard way after a trip up the coast where the salt spray basically etched itself into my glass because I hadn't protected it. Never again.

Deep Clean is Non-Negotiable

You can't just chuck a repellent over dirty glass. It'll fail in a week. After 15 years in the trade, my go-to move is using a clay bar on the glass first. It sounds weird if you’ve only ever used it on paint, but it's the only way to get off the invisible grit and baked-on bug guts. If the glass feels 'bumpy' to your fingernail, it's not clean enough for a coating yet.

The Magic of Glass Polish

If you've got those annoying white circles (water spots) that won't budge, you need a dedicated glass polish. I usually use something like Autoglym Car Glass Polish. It's got mild abrasives that strip away the minerals that the Aussie sun bakes into the glass. A customer once brought in a Range Rover that looked like it had been parked under a sprinkler for a month, a quick machine polish on the glass saved him a fortune on a new windscreen.

Timing the Application

Don't ever apply these treatments in the middle of the day when it's 40 degrees. The product will flash (dry) instantly and leave a smeary mess that is a nightmare to buff off. Wait until the arvo when the glass is cool to the touch. I made this mistake once on a black Commodore in the sun, took me two hours of scrubbing with IPA just to get the streaks off. Do it in the shade, or don't do it at all.

Check Your Wipers

A high-end repellent like Gtechniq G1 or even the classic Rain-X is useless if your wiper blades are buggered. If they're split or crunchy from the UV, they'll just chatter across the new coating. Give the rubber blades a wipe with some glass cleaner too, you'd be surprised how much black gunk comes off them.

Outback Dust Defence

If you're heading out west, a good glass sealant is a lifesaver. The red dust doesn't 'stick' as hard to the treated surface. When you get to camp, a quick splash of water usually clears the whole screen because the surface is so slick. It saves you from using your wipers and scratching the glass with the dry sand.

The Essentials Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
Fine Clay Bar and Lubricant — Takes the 'grit' off the glass.
Glass Polish — Removes water spots and old waxes.
IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) or Prep Spray — Crucial to strip all oils before the repellent goes on.
Quality Glass Repellent — Bowden's Own 'Clean Detail' or Gtechniq are my top picks.
Fresh Microfibre Towels — Use at least two, one to apply, one to buff.

Watch Out

Don't use household 'Windex' with ammonia if you have aftermarket window tint, it'll turn the tint purple and make it bubble over time. Also, never use a kitchen scourer on your glass to get bugs off. I've seen so many windscreens ruined by 'helpful' mates doing that. It leaves deep scratches that catch the light at night and make it impossible to see.
03

Common Questions

How long does a treatment last?
In our harsh UV, a cheap spray-on might last 3-4 weeks. A proper ceramic glass coating like Gtechniq G1 can honestly last 6-12 months if you prep it right. If you're using your wipers constantly, it'll wear off faster.
Why are my wipers 'jumping' after I applied the repellent?
This usually happens if the glass wasn't 100% clean or if you used too much product. Give the glass a firm wipe with a damp cloth, then a dry one. If that fails, clean your wiper blades with some alcohol. Usually, it settles down after a few days.
Can I use this on my side mirrors?
Absolutely. I reckon it's even more important there because you don't have wipers to clear them. Having water bead off your mirrors in a storm makes a massive difference when you're changing lanes.
04

The Last Word

Right, so that's the gist of it. Clean it, polish it, strip the oils, and then apply your protection in the shade. It’s a bit of a localized workout for your arms, but when you're driving through a summer storm and the water is just vanishing off the screen, you'll reckon it was worth the effort. Stay safe on the roads and keep that vision clear. Cheers!
