Decontaminate Before You Protect

Don't just chuck wax over dirty paint. After a summer of outback trips or highway driving, your paint is likely full of iron filings and red dust. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore years ago, I waxed over some fallout and it looked like sandpaper under the sun. Hit it with a clay bar or a chemical iron remover first. Bowden's Own 'Three Way' is my go-to for this. It gets the surface smooth as glass so your protection actually sticks.

The Bat Poo Hazard

Autumn is prime time for bats and birds to go to town on your bonnet. Because the panels are still getting hot in the arvo, that acidic mess bakes in fast. I've seen bat droppings eat through clear coat in less than 24 hours. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and a clean microfibre in the boot. If you see a hit, get it off immediately. Don't wait until the weekend wash or you'll be looking at a permanent etch mark.

Sealant Over Wax for Longevity

I love the glow of a carnauba wax, but honestly, it won't survive an Aussie autumn. It melts at high temps. For March, I reckon you're better off with a synthetic sealant or a ceramic spray like Gtechniq C2. It handles the heat better and stands up to the salt spray if you're living down by the beach. It'll give you 4-6 months of protection, taking you right through the wet months.

Don't Forget the Plastics

UV levels stay high in March, and your black plastic trim is the first thing to fade and go grey. A customer once brought in a brand new Ranger with trim that looked ten years old because of the sun. Give your trim a wipe down with a dedicated UV protectant like Aerospace 303. Don't use that greasy 'tyre shine' rubbish on your dash or exterior trim, it'll just attract dust and turn into a muddy mess.

Watch Out

Never wash your car in the direct midday sun when the metal is hot enough to fry an egg. I've seen guys do this at the local car wash and the soap dries instantly, leaving spots that are a nightmare to remove. Also, don't use dish soap. It's for greasy pans, not your paint, it'll strip every bit of protection you have left.

Is a ceramic spray as good as a professional coating?
Nah, not even close. A pro coating lasts years, while a spray is a few months. But for 20 bucks and 10 minutes of work, a spray is 100 times better than doing nothing at all.
How do I get red dust out of the crevices?
Use a soft detailing brush and some soapy water around the window seals and badges. If you leave that red dust there, it holds moisture and can start corrosion over winter.
My paint feels rough even after a wash. What's up?
That's industrial fallout or tree sap. You need to hit it with a clay bar. If you don't, your wax won't bond and your paint will never really shine.
