Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many decent cars ruined by neglect and that harsh Aussie sun. This is the exact routine I use for my mobile clients to keep their paint from fading into a chalky mess. Whether you're dealing with coastal salt or that stubborn red dust, this list covers the essentials to keep your car looking brand new.

01

Why Bother Every Week?

Thing is, leaving bat droppings or salt on your paint for more than a few days in 35-degree heat is a recipe for disaster. I once had a customer bring in a black Commodore where the bird crap had literally etched through the clear coat in 48 hours. Don't be that guy. Grab a cold one and give it a quick once-over every weekend.

The Essential Gear

What You'll Need

0/7
Two 15L buckets with grit guards — Crucial for not scratching the paint with trapped dirt.
Quality pH-neutral wash — I reckon Bowden's Own Nanolicious is the best for our conditions.
Microfibre wash mitt — Ditch the sponges, they're paint killers (trust me on this).
Large microfibre drying towel — Gyeon Silk Dryer or similar. Chamois are old school and risky.
Wheel cleaner and dedicated brush — P21S or Meguiar's Ultimate Wheel Cleaner works wonders.
Quick Detailer / Spray Sealant — Gyeon Q2M WetCoat is a lifesaver for adding quick UV protection.
Pressure washer or hose with nozzle — More pressure means less touching the paint.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check paint temperature — If the bonnet is hot to the touch, wait. Don't wash in direct sun.
Inspect for 'biologicals' — Check for bird/bat droppings or smashed bugs on the front bar.
Check wheel condition — Look for heavy brake dust that might need extra dwell time.
Windows up and sunroof shut — Made this mistake once on the missus' car, she didn't let it go for weeks.

The Step-By-Step Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Always do wheels first so grime doesn't splash on clean paint. Spray cleaner, agitate with a brush, and rinse thoroughly.

02

The Heavy Rinse

Bluntly, you want as much dirt off before you touch it. Focus on wheel arches and the lower sills where red dust hides.

03

Contact Wash

Use the two-bucket method. Wash from the roof down. Only use light pressure, let the mitt do the work, no need to scrub.

04

Decontamination Check

While wet, check if water is sheeting. If it's sticking, chuck on some spray sealant to boost that UV protection against the March sun.

05

The Great Dry

Lay the drying towel flat and pull it across. Don't forget the door jams and fuel cap, water loves to hide there and drip later.

05

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Glass check — Look for streaks. A clean microfibre and a bit of glass cleaner goes a long way.
Tyre shine — Optional, but it finishes the look. Use a water-based one to avoid 'sling' onto your clean panels.
Trim check — Make sure no wax or soap is drying white on the black plastic trims.

Watch Out

Never use dish soap, it strips everything and dries out your rubber seals. Also, if you've been out near the coast, spend extra time rinsing the undercarriage; salt is a silent killer for Aussie 4x4s.

Detailer's Secret

If you've got stubborn bugs on the bumper, don't scrub 'em. Soak a microfibre in warm soapy water and let it sit on the spot for 5 minutes. They'll slide right off. No dramas.
