Summer Interior Survival Checklist (Feb 2026)

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

It's hitting 40 degrees and the interior of your car is basically a slow-cooker. This checklist covers the gear and steps you need to stop the Aussie sun from cracking your dash and ruining your leather.

Summer Interior Survival Checklist (Feb 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, February in Oz is brutal on car guts. Between the red dust from that weekend away and the salt air if you're lucky enough to live near the coast, your cabin takes a beating. I've seen way too many nice interiors ruined because people ignored them until the dash literally started peeling. This is my personal go-to list for keeping things fresh when the mercury rises.

01

The Essential Summer Gear

What You'll Need

0/8
A decent vacuum with a crevice tool — Get right into the seat bolsters where the sand hides.
Interior Detailer with UV inhibitors — My go-to is Bowden's Own Interior Detailer. It's not greasy.
Microfibre cloths (at least 5-6) — Chucking a dirty rag on a clean seat is a rookie move.
Soft-bristled detailing brush — Essential for getting dust out of air vents and buttons.
Leather cleaner and conditioner — I reckon Gtechniq L1 is the best for our heat.
Glass cleaner (tint-safe) — Avoid anything with ammonia or you'll ruin your tint.
APC (All Purpose Cleaner) diluted 10:1 — For the really grubby bits like door sills.
A bucket of clean water — To rinse your cloths as you go.
02

Before You Start

What You'll Need

0/3
Park in the shade — Seriously. I once tried detailing a black leather interior in the sun. Never again. The product evaporated instantly and left streaks.
Open all the doors — Let that hot air out or you'll be sweating like a pig within five minutes.
Check for 'surprises' — Look under the seats for old Maccas fries or melted crayons, the heat makes 'em nasty.

The Summer Deep Clean Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Big Blowout

Use your brush to flick dust out of vents and seams while vacuuming. If you've been out west, that red dust gets everywhere. Get it all out first.

02

The Hard Surfaces

Wipe down the dash, console, and door cards with your interior detailer. Don't forget the top of the steering column, people always miss that bit.

03

Leather Hydration

Apply your leather conditioner. In 40-degree heat, leather loses moisture fast. I've seen seats crack in one summer because they weren't fed. Give it a good go.

04

The Glass

Clean the inside of the windscreen. Use two cloths, one to apply and one to buff. It stops that annoying hazy glare when you're driving into the afternoon sun.

05

Door Seals

Wipe the rubber seals with a damp cloth. Salt and dust perish these quickly in summer, leading to nasty windsqueaks later on.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check for 'high spots' — Make sure you haven't left any greasy patches on the dash that'll reflect in the glass.
The 'Mate' Test — Sit in the passenger seat. You see things from there you miss from the driver's side.
Smell check — If it still smells like a wet dog, you might need to check the cabin air filter. Usually lives behind the glovebox.

Watch Out

Look, whatever you do, do NOT use those 'shiny' silicone sprays from the servo. They're like a magnifying glass for UV rays and will eventually turn your dash into a sticky, cracked mess. Stick to matte finishes. Also, if you're using a wet vac, make sure the carpets are 100% dry before closing the car up, or you'll walk back into a sauna full of mould.

Pro Tip

If you've got kids or a dog, chuck a bit of fabric protector on the rear seats after cleaning. It makes the next spill way easier to wipe off. My missus reckons it's the only reason our family wagon doesn't look like a bin.
