Stink-Free Summer: Your Odour Elimination Checklist

Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

Don't let a spilled iced coffee or damp beach gear turn your car into a bin this summer. This checklist covers how to kill smells at the source rather than just masking them with cheap air fresheners.

Stink-Free Summer: Your Odour Elimination Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, we've all been there where the car starts smelling a bit 'off' after a beach trip or a long cruise in the heat. To be honest, most of those hanging trees just make it smell like a pine forest in a landfill. This guide is for the blokes and ladies who want the smell gone for good, especially when that 40 degree Aussie sun starts cooking whatever is hiding in your carpets.

01

A Quick Reality Check

I once had a customer bring in a LandCruiser that smelled like a prawn trawler left in the sun at Exmouth. Turns out a bait bucket leaked into the rear carpet three weeks prior. (Trust me, that's a smell that stays with you). If you don't find the source, you're wasting your time. My go-to is always a deep clean first, then chemistry later. Don't bother with those cheap 'New Car Smell' sprays from the servo, they last ten minutes and then the funk comes back twice as hard.

The 'Stink-Slayer' Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Wet/Dry Vacuum — Essential for sucking out the liquid nasties.
Enzyme-based cleaner — P&S Terminator or Bowden's Own Pong-Go are crackers for organic smells.
Microfibre cloths — Grab a 10-pack, you'll be binning the ones used on the worst bits.
Soft-bristle drill brush — Saves your elbows when scrubbing the floor mats.
Steam cleaner (optional) — If you've got one, use it. Heat kills bacteria better than anything.
New Cabin Filter — Don't skip this. Ryco make 'N99' ones that are brilliant for Aussie dust.
Odour Bomb / Fogger — Meguiar's Air Refresher is okay for light stuff, but Gtechniq W2 is better for wiping down.
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) mix — Good for wiping hard surfaces where milk or juice might have splashed.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/5
Check under the seats — I've found half-eaten maccas chips from 2022 under there before, check properly.
Check the spare tyre well — Water sits here and goes stagnant. It'll smell like a swamp if you don't dry it.
Inspect the cabin filter — If it's grey and full of leaves, that's your problem right there.
Test carpet for dampness — If it's wet, you might have an AC drain blockage or a leak.
Sun check — Park in the shade. Working in 40 degree heat makes chemicals dry too fast and gives you a headache.

The Deep Clean Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Junk Removal

Chuck every bit of rubbish out. Check the door pockets and that weird gap between the seat and the centre console.

02

Dry Vacuuming

Vacuum like your life depends on it. You need to get the dry dust and sand out before you add any liquid cleaners.

03

Enzyme Treatment

Spray your enzyme cleaner on the 'hot spots'. Let it sit for 5-10 mins. It actually 'eats' the bacteria causing the smell.

04

Agitation and Extraction

Scrub the carpets with your brush, then use the wet vac to suck the moisture out. (Made this mistake on a black Commodore, didn't extract enough and it went mouldy).

05

Hard Surface Wipe

Wipe every plastic surface. Milk splashes on a hot dashboard are basically a biohazard after a day in the sun.

06

Cabin Filter Swap

Chuck the old filter. Spray a little bit of disinfectant into the intake vents while the fan is running on fresh air mode.

05

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check seatbelt webbing — Sweat and skin oils build up here and they stink. Wipe 'em down.
Sniff test (the 'Missus' test) — Get someone else to smell it. You've probably gone nose-blind by now.
Windows down — Leave the windows cracked in the garage to let any remaining moisture escape.
Check headliner — Smoke smells live in the roof lining. Give it a very light mist of fabric refresher.

Watch Out

Never use an Ozone generator while you're inside the car, it'll wreck your lungs. Also, be careful steaming leather seats; too much heat can shrink the hide and then you're looking at a massive bill from the trimmer.

One Last Thing

If you've been off-roading and the car smells like red dust and damp dog, try leaving a tub of activated charcoal or even an open bag of coffee beans under the seat for a few days. Sounds like an old wives' tale, but I reckon it actually helps soak up the lingering bits.
