Air first, water second

If you've got red dust everywhere, don't just grab the hose and start spraying. You'll just turn it into mud that hides in every crevice. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore I used to own, ended up with red streaks for months. Use a leaf blower or a compressor to blow out the door shuts, fuel filler cap, and air vents first. Get as much of that dry dust out as you can before you get it wet. Trust me, it makes the wash ten times easier.

The salt neutraliser trick

Salt is the enemy, simple as that. If you've been beach driving, a normal wash isn't enough. I reckon you should grab something like salt-away or even the Bowden’s Own Muck Off. Chuck it in a foam cannon and coat the whole underbody. Give it 5-10 minutes to work its magic (don't let it dry though) and then blast it. It breaks down the salt crystals that a normal pressure washer just skips over. I wouldn't bother with those cheap 'salt-free' sprays from the servo, they're mostly water.

Leather and UV don't mix

In this Aussie summer heat, your interior is basically an oven. If you've got leather seats, that red dust acts like sandpaper on them. Give them a quick wipe with a damp microfibre, then hit them with a decent conditioner. I’m a big fan of the Gtechniq L1 Guard, it doesn't leave that greasy 'cheap car yard' shine, but it actually protects against the UV and stops the dust from grinding in next time you hop in with your work gear on.

Deal with the 'Kamikaze' bugs

After a night drive, your bullbar probably looks like a crime scene. In 40-degree heat, those bug guts become acidic and will etch into your paint or chrome in hours. Don't scrub them with a brush! You'll just swirl the paint. Soak a towel in warm soapy water, lay it over the bumper for 10 minutes to soften them up, and they'll slide right off. Or just use a dedicated bug remover like the Meguiar's one, it's worth the twenty bucks.

Underbody water broom or angled wand — Saves your back and gets the salt out of the chassis rails.

Microfibre drying towel — Because water spots in 40-degree sun are a nightmare to remove.

Watch Out

Don't wash your car in direct sunlight when it's 40 degrees out. The soap will dry before you can rinse it, leaving nasty streaks that are a prick to get off. Also, never use a high-pressure washer too close to your radiator fins or electrical connectors, you'll flatten the fins or fry a sensor, and that's a weekend ruined right there.

Common Questions

Can I just use a drive-through wash?
Honestly? I wouldn't. Most of them use recycled water that still has salt traces in it, and those big brushes are basically 'scratch-o-matics' for your paint. If you're lazy, at least go to a DIY bay and use the pressure wand yourself.
How do I get the red dust smell out?
Check your cabin air filter! People always forget this. If you've been out west, that filter is probably choked with dust. Swap it for a new one (takes 2 minutes) and your aircon won't smell like a construction site anymore.
Is ceramic coating worth it for a 4x4?
100%. I put it on my own rig. It makes the mud and red dust wash off with half the effort. It doesn't stop rock chips, but for maintenance, it's a game changer.
