Why Bother With Door Jambs?

Thing is, door jambs are the ultimate trap for all the rubbish we deal with in Oz. If you’ve been out west, that fine red dust gets in there and acts like sandpaper on your paintwork. Or, if you're like my mate who lives near the coast in GC, that salt spray just sits in the hinges and starts the slow crawl of rust. I learned this the hard way when I bought an old LandCruiser that looked mint on the outside, but the door shuts were absolutely cooked because the previous owner never touched 'em. A bit of effort now saves you a massive headache later, trust me.

Stop Using the Pressure Washer Inside

I've seen so many people just blast their door jambs with a high-pressure hose at the servo. Don't do it. You'll end up soaking your carpet, or worse, fried electronics in the door loom. I made this mistake myself on a black Commodore years ago and spent the whole arvo drying out the footwells. Just use a trigger spray bottle and a brush. Much safer.

The All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) Trick

My go-to product for this is Bowden’s Own 'Agent Orange' or a decent APC diluted 10:1. If you've got grease build-up around the hinges, let the product dwell for 2-3 minutes. Don't let it dry in the sun though! Use a soft detailing brush to agitate the gunk. It’s weirdly satisfying seeing that brown slurry run off.

Don't Forget the Rubber Seals

Aussie UV is brutal on rubber. After you've cleaned the jambs, chuck some protectant like 303 Aerospace or Meguiar’s Natural Shine on the rubber seals. It stops them from drying out and cracking in the 40-degree heat. If they’re sticking, a tiny bit of silicone spray on a microfibre cloth works wonders too.

Microfibre is Your Mate

Use your 'retired' microfibres for this. You know, the ones that are too crusty for the bonnet but still have some life in 'em. Door jambs are usually greasy, so you don't want to ruin your brand new $20 drying towel on a hinge covered in lithium grease. Wipe it down, then use a second dry cloth to buff it off.

Soft Detailing Brush — A 1-inch boar's hair brush is perfect.
Old Microfibre Towels — At least 3 or 4.
Rubber Protectant — To fight that harsh UV damage.
Spray Bottle of Water — For rinsing without the high-pressure mess.

Watch Out

Avoid spraying water directly into the door latch or any visible wiring looms. Also, never use a wire brush to get rid of grime, you'll strip the paint right back to the metal and then you're inviting the rust gods for a visit.

How often should I do this?
Honestly, I reckon every second wash is fine for a daily driver. If you've just come back from a dusty camping trip, do it immediately.
Can I use a steam cleaner?
Yeah, steam is actually brilliant for door jambs if you've got one. It cuts through grease like butter without using heaps of chemicals. Just watch your fingers, it gets bloody hot.
What if there is actual rust in there?
If it's just surface spots, clean it and hit it with a bit of lanolin spray. If it's bubbling, you've got a bigger job on your hands and might need to see a panel shop.
