The Fur Struggle is Real

Nothing ruins a nice interior like a thick layer of Kelpie glitter. If you've got a dog and a car, you know the drill, that hair doesn't just sit on top, it spears itself into the fabric like tiny little needles. I once had a customer bring in a LandCruiser after a month-long trip to the NT, and honestly, I thought the floor was made of Labrador fur. Standard vacuuming won't touch it. You need friction and a bit of technique to actually pull those fibres out.

The Rubber Glove Trick

If you're on a budget, just grab a standard yellow dishwashing glove from under the sink. Put it on, get it slightly damp (not soaking!), and run your hand over the carpet in one direction. The static and friction will ball the hair up into little rolls that you can just pick up. It's cheap, but it works better than most 'specialty' brushes I've seen at the servo.

Invest in a Lilly Brush

Honestly, don't waste your money on those weird rubber rakes or pumice stones. After 15 years, the only tool I swear by is the Lilly Brush Mini Pet Hair Detailer. It's got a flexible rubber edge that gets right into the corners. I used one on a black Commodore last week that was absolutely caked in white cat hair, saved me about an hour of swearing and sweating in the 38-degree heat. Usually, you can grab them from detailing shops or online.

Fabric Softener is Your Secret Weapon

If the hair is really stubborn, mix a capful of fabric softener with water in a spray bottle. Give the carpet a light mist. It helps break the static bond between the hair and the carpet fibres. Just don't go overboard, you don't want your car smelling like a laundromat for the next month, and you definitely don't want to soak the foam underneath.

The Two-Handed Technique

This is how the pros do it. Hold the vacuum nozzle in one hand and your brush/glove in the other. Agitate the carpet to pull the hair to the surface and suck it up immediately. If you wait, the hair just settles back in or blows around. It's a bit of a workout for the arms, but it's the only way to get a 100% clean finish.

The Fur-Busting Kit

Watch Out

Don't use a pumice stone on delicate plastics or thin carpets. I've seen blokes chew straight through the floor mats of a modern Euro car because they were scrubbing too hard. Also, never try this when you're already heat-stressed. Doing a full pet-hair extraction in a closed car when it’s 40 degrees outside is a recipe for disaster. Crack the doors and do it in the shade of the carport.
