Clean Your Interior Door Panels Like a Pro

Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

Ever noticed how the driver's door gets that nasty grey armrest grime? This checklist gets your door cards back to factory fresh while protecting them from the brutal Aussie sun.

Clean Your Interior Door Panels Like a Pro

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, people spend all day on the paint but forget that the door panels are what you actually see every time you're driving. Between the red dust from that weekend away and the sunscreen stains from the kids, they take an absolute beating. I've put together this quick checklist so you can knock 'em over in about 40 minutes without making a mess of your carpet.

01

A Quick Word from the Trade

I've seen some shockers over the last 15 years, usually involve people using harsh household cleaners that turn the plastic white after a week in the sun. I once had a customer try to clean red Pilbara dust off his LandCruiser panels with a kitchen scourer. Ruined the grain completely. Don't be that bloke. Use the right gear and she'll look mint for years.
02

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) — Dilute it 10:1. I reckon Bowden's Own Agent Orange is a cracker for this.
Soft Boar's Hair Brushes — Perfect for getting into the window switch gaps and speaker grilles.
3-4 Microfibre Towels — Get the decent ones, not the cheapies from the supermarket that lint everywhere.
Interior Scrub Pad — Like a 'scrub n' rub' pad. Great for that stubborn armrest skin oil.
UV Protectant — Something like Aerospace 303 or Meguiar's Ultimate Interior Protectant is essential for our sun.
Soft Toothbrush — For the really tight spots around the door handle.
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — Gotta get the loose grit out of the map pockets first.
Quality Glass Cleaner — For any overspray that hits the window.
03

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for electronics — Are there sensitive speakers or window switches? Don't soak 'em.
Test a spot — Always test your cleaner on a hidden bit down low to make sure it doesn't stain.
Park in the shade — Never do this if the door cards are hot to the touch. The cleaner will just streak.
Empty the pockets — Chuck the old maccas receipts and loose change in a bin first.
04

The Step-by-Step

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Vac

Vacuum the map pockets and speakers. If you skip this, you'll just be turning red dust into red mud once you add liquid.

02

Spray the Brush (Not the Door)

Don't spray the panel directly. Spray your brush or pad first. This stops cleaner from dripping into the switches or onto the carpet.

03

Agitate the Grain

Work in small sections. Use your brush in circular motions to lift the dirt out of the plastic grain. Focus on the armrest and pull handle.

04

Wipe Away

Use a clean microfibre to wipe the lifted grime off before it dries. If it's still dirty, give it another crack. Don't be shy.

05

Detail the Tight Spots

Use the toothbrush or a small detailing brush for the door latch and the grooves around the power window buttons.

06

Apply Protection

Once the panel is dry, wipe on your UV protectant. This is the most important step for the Aussie Autumn sun. Buff to a matte finish.

05

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the speakers — Make sure no white residue is stuck in the tiny holes.
Feel the armrest — Does it still feel sticky? If so, it needs another hit of APC.
Inspect the glass — Wipe off any streaks where your cleaner might have touched the window.
Uniform finish — Make sure the dressing isn't patchy or too shiny. A matte look is always better.

Watch Out

Avoid 'Magic Erasers' on leather or soft-touch plastics. They're basically sandpaper and will strip the dye right off, I learned that the expensive way on a mate's BMW. Also, keep the silicone-heavy 'shiny' sprays away; they're magnets for dust and will just bake onto your dash in the heat.

Quick Tips

If you've got leather inserts, treat them with a dedicated leather conditioner after cleaning. The dry heat in March can cause them to crack if they're left thirsty. And yeah, that's pretty much it. Easy as.
